hi. i just picked up a 1953 goldflash . it has a 1956 engine the gearbox has a small r stamped on it. the first time i took out for a ride it seemed like i was pulling out in second gear. i have been trying to time gears with no luck. does not matter what position i put camplate in i get one or two clicks then nothing. any thoughts. thanks.

I don't know much about A10 gearboxes and from what you describe it sounds like you can't select all the gears which indicate either a worn box or incorrect adjustment. The usual suspects are worn/bent selector forks, worn cam plate, lack of shimming on layshaft & main shaft.

Suggest you invest in a repair manual and dig deeper into the gearbox. Usually, the cause is apparent when you look closely at all the components. Try googling A10 gearbox rebuild, there are plenty of videos and other forums with advise.

Hi
The gearchange mechanism changed design at one stage, I thought the plunger models had the early type, but do not know for sure
The early mechanism is very sensitive to gasket thickness that affects the gear change
Best place to ask and post pictures is the A10 forum

Hi
The early box is not timed there is a ratchet claw that moves the camplate
