When Lucas made them, was the main case painted, zinc or cadmium plated, or just left "plain?"
I've never seen an original-finish one, all mine are in rough shape.

Irish---the ones that I have come across over the years looked to me to have been cad plated.

I've been tossing up whether they are cad plated or electroless nickel.
I suspect the nickel.

But they don't seem to corrode, to give a clue.
Which might make them dull chrome ??

I've been meaning to chemically test them.
But don't want a big rusty spot !

I asked because I'm gathering parts to rebuild one, and since I have to strip out the case anyway, I want to refinish the case correctly.

THANKS, everyone.

If you paint it the only ground path is through the bearings and drive

Nickel until the shortage in 1952. Cadmium after that.
During the war they seem to have been unplated.
I get them zinc plated when restoring.

lack of nickel in the staes rezulted in what waz called "korean chrome."

52 packards had bumpers that began peeling way before their time
