I had to go back into the gear box and now I only have 1st 2nd and 3rd. I put the indexed in the middle of the three notches and the middle tooth on the quadrant on the center line. I thought.

I'm guessing my problem lies here. But rather than just trying different positions I'd ask for guiden e.

Thanks

Four or five speed?
I remember the first time I indexed a five speed I followed the Haynes manual. For some reason they copied the text from the five speed WSM but showed pictures from the four speed. I followed the pictures and ended up with a four speed, no top gear.
One tooth off on the quadrant and it can't move far enough to select top gear.

Stepping on others doesn't make you stand tall.

Attempting to decipher I take it you mean the camplate is at the neutral position?

If the factory manual instructions are followed then once the gears are assembled the camplate (set at the neutral notch) should be turned to the 1st gear position before the outer cover is fitted. If that isn't done then the quadrant timing will be wrong.

I don't understand that but it doesn't sound right.

Assuming its a 4 speed and assuming its similar to a 650, there's a guy named hermit that did some detailed write ups with good pictures

I think I understand the reference to "middle tooth on the quadrant on the center line" as it seems you could be reading the HAYNES crazy Trident manual as that says;

"10.6 Set the camplate with the plunger located between second and third gears."

The camplate should be set at the neutral notch as shown in manual pic.10.5.

"11.3 .....position the camplate quadrant in the middle point of its travel and then push the cover fully home. The middle tooth then aligns with the mainshaft centre line..."

Which is wrong for a 5-speed gearbox as it continues: "...The five speed gearbox on the demonstration model has chalk marks to show the alignment for FIRST gear." (manual pic. 11.3.) but fails to mention the camplate should be moved to the first gear notch as stated previously.
