as above. Trying to find a 1/16" silicone rocker gasket. Can only see them in usa. Eu would be OK. Its had the front engine brace lug welded on in the past and I think its warped slightly. Hopefully a thicker gasket will cure it.

Regards

Richard.

I only use paper gaskets. Have you fastened sandpaper to piece of glass and trued the gasket face? Figure 8 motion until all is smooth.

You can't do it to the head. The rocker webs are in the way.

I make my own from 1.6mm Nitrile rubber sheet off eBay. Never leaks and can be reused many times.

You can on the rocker box and it’s most likely this has been spread by being pulled in too tight. You can use a sharpening stone to show up and high spots on the head

Allan, if read my post, I've said that the engine brace lug has been welded back onto the head and the finished result is not quite flat. I can see torch light when I put a straight edge on it.
I could whip the head off and give it a couple of thou hair cut all around the edge on the milll , but I thought I'd try a thicker gasket first.

The rocker cover i know is flat, I've already lapped it

Cheers
Richard.

I agree

Using a gasket won’t mask this issue, you can use the stone as mentioned to get it flat again, but the best way would be to drop it off at a machine shop and ask them to mill the surfaces flat. Providing that the only “bad” spots are raised you shouldn’t be taking too much off and only that in the repaired area. It’d have been cheaper and quicker to have sourced another head though instead of faffing around.

why not try gently running a large flat file over the rocker gasket surfaces to relieve any high spots. Given the rocker posts are in the way, this would need to be done from several directions with the studs removed. Additionally, before refitting the studs, lightly countersink the stud holes to remove any pulled up metal. I've used this technique several times and its surprising how many high spots are revealed, it works well but only if the gap is small.

If this technique doesn't remove the gap you could try making your own gasket using 1.5mm cork/nitrile rubber gasket sheet, see This Link for example material. It should be easy enough to cut the gasket outside outline using the rocker cover as a guide and the stud holes could be marked with a pen and then punched out with a hole punch.

I appreciate everyone's suggestions and agree with them, but I didn't ask how to fix the problem, only if anyone new if you could get a silicone rocker gasket in the UK.

If I wanted to do it properly, which I might do in the future if the head has to come off, then I'll mill it on my own mill.

I don't have time at the moment with other projects and repairs on the go.

So if a thick silicone or nitrile gasket will fix, mask or bodge the leak for the time being, then I'm happy with that. If it doesn't then it will remain leaking until I have time to do it properly

Cheers

Richard.

That nitrile sheet seems like the way to go. 1.5 mm should be plenty thick enough.

If you cannot find a nitrile gasket in the UK, you can have one made by laser cutting. Companies over here such as Pololu offer laser cutting for many materials including rubber sheet.

I don't know about in the UK, but over here the better automotive supply stores like NAPA carry a variety of gasket materials by the roll. One material is called rubber-fiber compound, and that's what I use for my rocker box cover, sump cover, and primary cover. It's thicker and "squishier" than paper gasket, and for the most part works without sealer or gasket cement, although I cement them to the covers only, for easy removal of the covers. These stores also sell cork gasket material.

I know you didn't ask about repairing the mating surface, but since it came up I'll add my 2 cents: If your weld repair just created high spots and didn't actually distort the mating surface, you should be able to fix it with a flat file as was suggested above.

thanks mark, its not a high spot, its a hollow. the lug was welded back on before i bought it, and I've had it over three years. i removed the cover to do the tappets and threw the old gasket away, which was a thickish one. The new one is paper thin and even with copper gasket spray its not filled the hollow like the old one did.

I've ordered some nitrile sheet and i'll make one up.

cheers

Richard.

Ok, just one more thought, although you've probably already thought of this: A hollow can be filled with a hardening type of gasket cement or epoxy, and then filed and sanded off smooth.

But if, as you say, a thickish gasket keeps it from leaking, then I suppose that's as good a solution as any.

Dang hard to get in that area with a file since it's an inside curve, especially since a lot of flat files don't have a cutting edge all the way to the front end. Maybe some JB Weld, then sand paper to fill the low spots.

you're only talking a few thou Gary. A thick gasket will do just fine.

You could see on the head where the copper spray hadn't quite adhered to the surface from the gasket. There was a fine trace of copper all the way round the head until the hollow where there was about a 1/2" gap. Presumably washed out with the oil.

Cheers
Richard.

for those that are still interested, the first photo is what i had to play with regards the welded on lug.

second photo is rocker cover in place with a torch in side the head showing the hollow

on closer inspection of the head, i found that the one of the two half circle casting lugs was sitting on a weld that was slightly high, but not actually on the gasket mating surface.

after 10 minutes with a needle file and 10 minutes more lapping on the facing table with the rocker cover i've got the gap down to half a thou of [email protected] all.

nitrile should be here in a day or two, i'll post an update if anyone is interested.

cheers

richard.

I'm sure the nitrile gasket will cope with that and give you an oil tight joint.
