I recently purchased a 72 T100R and I have no spark. I have 12 bolts to both sides of the coil and I put a multimeter on both coil leads and they both read zero but when I put on plug wire to either contact using multimeter I have a decent reading. Does that mean the coils are bad?

By the way, I get that reading with the ignition turned off.

Probably many more questions to follow. I am hoping you knowledgeable guys can help me out.

Step #1 fix ignition switch, you may need to turn it off quick. I fix gliches as I find them, sometimes the original problem "fixes itself". Have you seen this bike run? If you need a schematic they are free now.

The 12 bolts are probably the wrong thread type.

There should be no voltage feed to coils when ignition is off.

Any pics so we can see ...?

You need to be more specific when describing what you are doing.
12 volts on both sides of the coil - meaning from each low voltage terminal to frame (or battery +) reads 12 volts? Do you have points? Are the points open or closed? Points open would read 12 volts on both terminals. Points closed would read battery voltage on one side and 0 volts on the other.
I put a multimeter on both coil leads - To where? Across the low voltage leads?
I put on plug wire to either contact - Plug wire goes from the high voltage terminal to the spark plug. What contact are you talking about?

The repair manual you need is here http://www.classicbike.biz/Triumph/Repair/350-500/63-74-350-500cc-Repair.pdf.

Section HH has the wiring diagrams and HH6 is correct for your bike but it’s not very legible. HH7 on the following page is identical except for the handlebar switches being swapped over, that’s what I used to re-wire my ‘72 T100R.

You can also go to the Britbike web sponsor CBS and download a factory manual there.
https://www.classicbritishspares.com/pages/workshop-service-and-repair-manuals%20
US wiring diagram is on H21 but check which model you have.
