I'm rebuilding a conical front brake for a US market 71 A65L. I have two available, one is unpainted, one is black. Which is correct?

AIUI 71's should have silver painted brake plate, looking at the catalogue photos at least.

I find the BSA NSW website a very useful tool and grateful for it. BSA NSW Catalogue page

Yes, but I painted them black on my '71, thought it looked better. ACE Hardware BBQ black gives a durable satin finish, not flat like RustOleum BBQ black.

And I used the '72 "quilted" pattern seat cover, too, looked better, IMO

That's a nice looking finish Kurt... did you use that on your fenders and frame too?

Thanks, Richard, Steve --

No regrets! I had my fun grin

Well, one regret in building, as cool as that Home Market tank is, it took a lot (time & money) to get it right, and it still was too close to the frame/tank/backbone, in spite of grinding away at the frame per Gavin's advice. The bike came with a big bulbous Triumph tank -- shoulda kept it!

OK, another regret -- rebuilding the motor I shoulda sprung fer new rods instead of re-conditioning the old ones.

And, yeah, the brakes ... if it wasn't for engine braking, I wouldn't have no braking at all laugh

Someone else's concern now haha

Steve I did use that ACE paint on the rear fender to help hide the body work. The other parts are gloss black. The front fender is gel coat black as it came from Glass-from-the-Past (Norton fender).

BTW, I'll be posting for sale a few BSA parts that I had left over ... stand by ...

Thanks,
The black plate came from a 72 Trident. The silver from a 72 Bonneville, both of which now have disc front ends.
No idea what color the original was on the BSA, it had a disc when I bought it (the one which is now on the Trident.) I think the frame was originally Dove Grey, every place the black paint is worn through appears to be that color.

My 1971 and 1972 OIF twins have silver plated brake plates. The catalog pictures show black for 1972, but I don't know if that actually made it to production.

Thanks for the kind words. The late Tarvin started that when he sent scans of, from memory, 1963 catalogues. Trevor and I both have some more sitting in the filing cabinets which we should scan and put online.

Your welcome Shane, but it really has helped me out over the years, my 68 lightning has seen a few different styles over the years and those catalogues have helped a lot. It’s lore of a mixture now between 67/68 and clubmans trim but I quite like it. The 71 thunderbolt is getting a lot of help from there at the moment.

I’ve seen some crackle black brake plates, but don’t know of their origin, whether from firebirds or B series bikes (ie B50 gold star)

How are things in your region at the moment? Vic and I have you and Cheryl in our thoughts, not understanding the extent of the situation we wait for pops on here to know that everything’s fine rather than bouncing messages over when your probably have more important things to be doing.

Things are pretty safe in our area now, after a couple of inches of rain over the last 10 days or so. We had a few nervous weeks over the Christmas/New Year period with one of the fires getting within a few miles, especially on the hot days over 40 degrees C.

We had the boom spray tanks full and hooked to the tractors, with the fire-fighting pump attached to one of them.
It's been a reminder of what can happen, so we'll install a rooftop sprinkler system and additional rainwater tank once the dust settles a bit. That, and getting the 4 ton truck back in action, with 4 x 1000 litre tanks on-board.
