I JUST RECEIVED A1975 NORTON COMMANDO WITH ORIGINAL 2100 MILES ON IT AND IT IS EVERYTHING I HOPED IT WOULD. IT IS TRULY A TIME CAPSULE AND I FEEL FORTUNATE TO BE IT'S 3RD CARETAKER. THE FIRST OWNER RODE IT FOR JUST 2100 MILES. THE 2ND OWNER PURCHASED IT FROM HIS ESTATE AND NEVER EVEN STARTED IT. ALL THAT WAS DONE DURING HIS STEWARDSHIP WAS TO PAINT THE GAS TANK AND SIDE COVERS BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL PAINT WAS BUBBLING. HE ALSO CHANGED THE MUFFLERS TO THE EARLIER PEASHOOTERS. WHICH I PREFER TO THE "BEAN CAN" STYLE "CORRECT" ONES. IT APPEARS THAT HE USED THE EARLIER STYLE MUFFLER BRACKETS BECAUSE HE SENT ME ALL OF THE ORIGINAL BRACKETS ALONG WITH THE, ORIGINAL STE OF KEYS, TOOL KIT, OWNERS manual, SHOP manual, AND PARTS BOOK. AS HE PROMISED THE MOTOR CAN BE ROTATED AND HAS EXCELLENT COMPRESSION THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAVE ENCOUNTER ARE THE KEYS AND LOCKS. THE IGNITION KEY WORKS BUT IS A LITTLE STIFF. I DO NOT SEEM TO BE ABLE TO WORK THE SEAT OR FORK LOCKS. I PLAN TO TRY A LITTLE GRAPHITE LUBRICANT ON THEM AFTER THE HOLIDAY. I HAD PLANNED INSTALL NEW TIRES AND RECOMMISSION IT BUT AFTER SEEING IT I'M OF THE OPINION THAT THE BEST WAY TO PRESERVE IT IS TO LEAVE IT AS IS. THERE ARE PLENTY OF RIDERS OUT THERE AND IT WILL NEVER HAVE 2100 MILES ON IT AGAIN. AM LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS FOR THE BEST WAY PROTECT THE MOTOR FOR LONG TERM STORAGE. IT IS STORED IN A CLIMATE CONTROLLED ROOM WITH MY OTHER BRIT. BIKES (THIS IS MY FORST NORTON).

There were a number of these that turned up new in crates a few years ago. Maybe one of them? Nortons new in crate It appears that whoever owned the bike previously did a good job of preserving the mechanics, so perhaps copy whatever they did.
I would drain all oil and gas. Leave the cap off the tank and allow it to evaporate. Spray some kind of oil product, like a light oil into the combustion chamber and turn over the motor to get it spread around.
Occasionally turn the motor over. The risk is that the rings will rust, or seize, or that the valve stems will rust and stick open the valve.
I like Tri-flow as a lube for cables and perhaps this situation. WD-40 will evaporate completely, eventually. There are several good alternatives on the market as well.
Cheers,
Bill

Strip it down to piece parts and immerse it in a vat of warm marmalade.
You may as well if you're not going to ride it.

Personally, i'd take it out and thrash the daylights out of it at every opportunity.

IF I WAS ABLE TO RIDE IT A BIT I WOULD. AS FAR AS THRASHING A PIECE OF HISTORY; IF YOU WANT TO DO THAT MAKE ME AN OFFER.

Looks nice.
I like them better with the side cover decal parallel with the ground or top of Z plate

I have a fairly virgin one also.
Never registered and 00005 miles on odo.
However a lot of mine has been dismantled for research of what the factory did in putting these together.
The head was pulled off since the valve stems had rust on them rebuilt and replaced....
I have one other, my runner, that I built from the ground-up. Plus two more baskets....

The new list price for these was $1295 at the shop I was at. Would that be a good offer?
A mechanic at the shop bought one. The factory forgot to remove all of the paper from the carb insulators creating an air leak. He had to replace the camshaft after a couple hundred miles. They forgot to harden the camshaft too.
caps lock turns off as well as on. see e.e.cummings. (i would not recommend reading his poetry though. dull, dull, dull, my god is it dull)

I HAVE HEARD ABOUT THE decals BEING PARALLEL TO THE GROUND AND I HAVE SEEN SOME BUT I ALSO DISCOVERED THIS SALES ADD WHICH SHOWS THRM ON A SLIGHT ANGLE LIKE THE ONES ON MY BIKE. ALSO ON THE LIINK THAT YOU SENT THERE ID A BLACK HIGH RIDER THAT SHOWS THEM ON AN ANGLE. SO I'M NOT SURE IF THEY DID THEM MORE THAN ONE WAY.

You see them at all angles, but the ones that look best are the ones that are parallel to the ground. !!

Fitting them up with the tank and sidecovers on the bike is the only way to ensure this.
I figured this out some years back - the 1st one I set up would have been way off, and needed to be redone.

Caps lock is easy to figure out ....

thanks for the comments on the stripes. i suspected as much. figuring out the caps lock is not difficult i just leave it on. using a shift ket when you only have full use of your right hand is whats difficult. this is how it looks with no caps.
