Assembling rear brake for my 1965 LR and noticed sprocket on 1 piece drum is worn out. I am wanting to keep bike as original as possible. Would I be better off converting to later drum with removable sprocket[if possible) or find a good new drum sprocket assembly. If going with 1 piece, who sells a good assembly. If going with 2 piece I realize would have to work on gearing.

It's always something.

Hi Beach. If you find an early bolt on sprocket hub then you can just fit a bigger front and carry on as you are. However if you find a post 66 type one with the aluminium brake plate... you will need to change both spindles, brake plate as the bearing in the drum is about 1mm smaller on the early ones compared to the late ones. Quite an expensive affair! I don’t know if the B44 rear drums will fit with little modification though. I believe the hole size in the centre of the brake plate is smaller, so if the bearing on the B44 is the same as the early A65 then I would take the chance that it would fit.

Clear as mud?

The 42t rear drum I have came from burton bike bits, I don’t know who there supplier is but it’s been really good and little wear.... saying that since I’ve been using Iwis mega life chains everything it’s fitted to is

Plus ones on that, Mr Gill, they are manufactured by an old company called Qualcast and they have the oval trade mark cast in the outside face of the drum, given that they are looked after they will give good service

Where do you find the Iwis chain? I have ordered them from a guy on accessnorton(Andychain) but think he retired.

I did get them from Sprockets unlimited but Sadly John passed away this August, such a shame as both he and Jane were/are very knowledgable, helpful and kind people. Jane has now
Closed the business down. I hope in time she will have a change of heart as I would give them my business any day of the week.

I checked the drum from Burtons and it's listed for up to 57 but takes 530 chain.. 67-6150 instead of 67-6149, for my bike. Would this one work? I think so.

I’m not sure what the differences are. I’ve just checked it out on Draganfly and they both exist as 42t drums so not sure what the difference is. Draganfly are listing the 67-6149 alternately drop Burton bike bits an email. They don’t list everything on their British bike bits website

Either way for the cost I would want to make sure I had the one with the correct part number attached. HTH

Got email back from Burton and the lady asked why I'd buy the 6150 because the bearing is larger. I explained I didnt know and wanted to buy the 6149. Several places list them both under same ad. I thought that only chain size was different. I think maybe the spring frame drum has the larger bearing.

That explains it. I will do some Searching later as to what size the bearing is and if it matches up with any other drum. Did she say if she had any in stock or not?

B25/B44 used a smaller bearing than the later A65's and these have the bolt on 520 sprockets, but chainline may not be the same, its a minefield. The smallest rear sprocket for the B25/B44 is 47T due to the bolts needing clearance.

Customs charges never cease to amaze me, it used to be quite cost effective to ship parts to the UK, it never seemed that expensive on postage and most things didn’t get stopped by customs. UK parcel force charge a packet for handling the package, like what the hell. That’s what you pay postage for, some sellers on eBay offer a pre customs payment thing. If they offer that it comes straight to the door and is never a problem. Otherwise it adds weeks on and they charge you for the pleasure. In many cases you can double the cost of what the part cost including postage.
