Yesterday while hunting on eBay for parts for my '70 TR6R, I saw something listed for a unit "antique Triumph".

I thought "'Antique UNIT?' that ain't OLD!" Then lightning struck my brain and I realized my '70 IS now FIFTY years old!

What really blows my mind is that my Tbolt was only about 12 years old when I bought it but it was "Olde" enough tech and styling compared to contemporary bikes ( Like the recent RZ350) that it SEEMED old.

Now it (And I) ARE old.

YES, K.C., especially when I consider that when my TR6R was new, fifty years before that, the 1920 models were also new.
And thirty years before THAT, there were almost NO motorcycles at all.

They all qualify for 'antique' plates.

i qualify as antique all by myself.

i realized yesterday that it had just passed thirty years to the day since i ran into the ancient steel and concrete vault at my publishing company to take shelter during the lomo prieta earthquake.

went home to find the old victorian houses that had made it through the quake in 1906 didn't make it through this one.

To Kevin Roberts:

The house was beautiful.
Were you able to repair it?

ah that one wasn't mine. it was on the corner down by the ferrari dealer. rather than fix it, the owners tore it down and brought in a gingerbread victorian on a truck and set it down in the same spot.

the town was full of million dollar old redwood houses that went sideways on the un-reinforced cripple walls. porches were down everywhere. lots of expensive victorians were too messed up to salvage.

i came home through pitch-black downtown where all the glass in the storefronts had blown out into the street and sheets of water were streaming down the gutters. when i got home all my bookshelves had fallen over, and the quake had knocked my 1950 hudson off the jackstands. liuckily the wheels were still on it.

for the next three days we didn't have electricity, but i had the only working telephone in the neighborhood. i spent a lot of time taking calls from complete strangers who found my number and asked me to call their husbands or wives to tell them that they were okay, but couldn't get home.

there werea ozen quakes a day for the next week, mostly 2s and 3s, but at least one 5.

I still try to delude myself that I'm not old. But 3-4 hours of chores and I'm beat, and two beers and I need a nap.

I just wish I could be rebuilt/done up/restored like my bikes. I'd look like a million dollars, new paint, rechrome, rings and bearings, head job [now that sounds interesting] and fresh fuel!!!
Instead I'm struggling on kidding myself that clapped out bearings and patina is cool!!!

Yep , it catches up on you when you are not looking.
A young lad who looked familiar came to the door one time with a trailer load of BSA parts, he introduced himself as Colin's son Colin ( weird family tradition 1st born males always called Colin )
I naturally though that he was the son of a school friend Colin who I had not kept good contact with for ages.
He said hi da sent him to me cause he thought I might be able to work out what he had in the trailer.
So latter on in the week I looked up Col & told him I sorted out his son.
That was when I got the bullet between the eyes, My son Colin is 38 & currently in Indonesia you must have been talking to my grandson Colin.
Seem just like yesterday we were letting off bungers in roadside culverts and chasing snakes in the creek.

(Don't let your wives see this one) but..

When men get older, they get more interesting.

When women get older, they just get OLD.

With my insurance I'd end up just like my bikes, held together with parts from Taiwan and India which don't quite fit.
At least my fresh fuel would contain alcohol. laugh
