This is all academic, but it has been bugging me. My B44 started life as a roadster but was "converted" at some point into a Victor Special. What is bugging me is when was it originally built? Frame # B44R 2434, Engine # B44R 2484. both nice clear stampings. Looking up the numbers puts the bike as a 1967, BUT it has a square barrel, shouldn't a '67 have a round one?

Well the barrels and heads are interchangeable and wear out so likely changed as it has been 50 years.

Your eng and frame numbers should match, so that 3 and 8 are both either 3 or 8, look closely, IMHO the frame 3 will be an 8 with the front bit very faint or missing as the stamp was not held straight.

Didn't the Victor Road have a square barrel from at least 1966? I think the first couple of years of the Victor Enduro used a round barrel, then switched to the square barrel around 1968 or 1969

66/67 B44E models were round barrel. First year for the roadster was 67 and it was a square barrel from the beginning.

Adding to Rich B.'s note, the serial number list provided by the BSAOC shows that the 1967 Roadster was the only serial number beginning with "B44R."
It was also the only year the "Roadster" was produced by that name.

As I said it was all academic anyway but now I have a major guilt trip! looking REALY closely (and using a fair bit of imagination) it is just possible that the frame # is indeed B44R 2484 not 2434. I had assumed the thing was NOT "matching numbers" so I had a free hand to do what the heck I wanted!

Thanks for clearing up the round vs square barrel conundrum.

On another point, how do you post a picture on this site??

https://postimages.org/ sign up and upload some pictures then copy the link for Hotlinks for forums and then paste it here.... Dont copy thumbnails for forum cause that gives you a tiny picture here.... Very easy process. Let us know if you have any questions .

Hey, thanks for the instructions, lets see if it works!
This is the thing I have been working on, somewhat different to what BSA did in '67.
Runs and handles great, great fun bike.

Quite likely as you say. The 3's had a flat top, not curved didn't they.

Gary is on to something, at that time a Ʒ would have been used for 3, so a mis stamped 8 would look like a 3 and the real 3 would have been Ʒ .
