Greetings,

I'm usually working on Triumphs and frequent the Triumphrat forum. Please don't hold that against me.

I am rewiring a 74 Norton Commando.

The bike has a 3 phase alternator with a 200w 3 phase pod, and a Tri-spark ignition.

I will keep the bike positive ground.

Is there any value in keeping the ignition warning light & warning light assimilator? Will it even work with the pod?

Thanks for all replies.

Phil

Should work but it may have already bit the dust as they were fragile to start with, they tell you when the charging system works and also when the ignition is on and the engine not running.

I bought one of these almost 10 years ago. Still working great.
No reason it won't work with the 200W alternator, I think.
However, it only serves to tell you that your alternator system is broken if it stays on. It doesn't give much info when it goes out, just that it's not actually broken.
It's an idiot light....for idiots, I suppose.
Cheers,
Bill

Thanks for the replies. I figured it wasn't much use, and the bike would perform fine without it. However, the owner of this bike likes it to be somewhat original, and would prefer it to operate as designed (other than having failures, as a result of Lucas electronics). I'll try it, see what happens, then reply with the results.

do you have the assimulator to reuse ?
which type ... there is more than one style .
and how important is " original" for such a marginally effective piece of equipment .

the original red warning light comes on with the ignition
and the assimulator ,
... opens the dc connection , with a certain amount of ac output .
( a simple relay function )...

using one with 3 phase would somewhat skew the bulbs on/off readings .( I'm pretty sure )
... but accuracy and efficiency are secondary to the simpler function of idiot light .
the bulb may flicker at idle before going out ... as the RPMs increase .
and fully light when headlight is on at idle .
( this would be either super active and handy ...or super irritating ? )

there is an earlier , simpler mechanical style ...using toaster wire to over heat and break the connection .
similar to an overload thermostat or blinker-thing with no blink . ... ( lives in a can on a spring )
... and an improved Style that uses a transistor .

if you dont have one in hand , I wouldn't bother .
( but the headlight shell hole can be reused more effectively )

these days there are options
both more efficient and practical ... and probably cheaper.
LED battery charge indicators ... with 3 color displays
the color changing with voltage
and adding blinking colors to indicate critical over and under voltages .
the wiring of these is also less complex .
2 wires , one wire to ignition switch power , the other wire to earthed .

http://www.sparkbright.co.uk/sparkright-eclipse-battery-voltage-monitor.php#
is just one of them . ..

I have these installed on all 3 of my Nortons:

The 3AW Ignition Warning Light relay is often a problem on our British cars. Not only is it delicate and failure prone, it can short, causing problems with other components. CoolCat has solved that problem! This solid state switch is a plug in replacement for the 3AW. No more shorts, no more failures. The switch is housed in a rugged weatherproof box. The box is 1"x1"x3/8", and can be inconspicuously tucked away under your heater. Actual color may be black (as pictured) or grey. Press to read installation instructions

Don't own a Jaguar? This switch will work for all negative ground cars and motorcycles that use a 3AW, including Triumph, Sunbeam, Aston Martin, Daimler, Norton, and even Rolls Royce/Bentley.
