I recently purchased a new set of AMAL 626 carbs. I put them on and took a 50 mile ride, they worked great! Afterwards, I removed the slides and saw they look really scuffed. (See photo:

What I'm concerned about, is if they look like this after only 50 miles, what are they going to look like after 500 miles? 5000 miles?

They do not look like the anodised slides but the old ones cast in the same material as the body, they will last about 5000 miles and take the body with rhem. You also look as if you are not running air filters. So add air filters and get some new anodised slides and fit them before the bodies wear out.

1) what were they like when fitted?

2) where did you get them from?

3) are you running air filters?

4) is there any chance the carb bodies are over tightened causing tighter clearances between slide and carb body?

I’ve ran open mouths on my carbs for a few years and never seen slide wear like that.

I got them new from Lowbrow Customs. I was sure not to over tighten the mounts.

You don't need to be riding on dirt to get enough debris and crap in the inlets to score the slides and bodies.
Fit filters, it's worth it. Anodised slides are good but fit filters first.

New slides on my T150. I had the carbs apart after maybe 70 miles and they showed a bit of wear even using the stock air filter.
But, these are in the old carb bodies.


Stepping on others doesn't make you stand tall.

Unless the body was not finished properly & deburred then.
Each & every vertial scratch is a grain of grit that has wedged itself between the slide & the body.
If you want to use stacks then you have to accept the wear.
They are items specifically designed for racing where new carbs 3 times a year is SOP.
If you want to get an idea of just ho much junk is in the air then wet a white hanky and leave it sitting along sode a rod for a few hours.
It won't stay white for very long.

They do wear heavily, but at 50 miles that is exceptional, and also the scratches being severe and from the very top, does suggest a certain lack of cleanliness on assembly.
I'd suggest thorough flushing with fuel or solvent, while rubbing the bearing surfaces very gently with something like fine wire wool to remove any embedded abrasive particles.
Also flush the rest of the carb parts, especially the underside of the top. It looks like muck was already in there, or has been drawn through the cable entries.
Wear usually shows as smoothish areas, that is grit.

Way back in the fifties, when scrambling on the Clipper, I smeared grease around the carb bell to see how much grit it would catch. At the end of the day, I'm sure I could have ground in the valves with what came off the bell......and that was in the winter when there wasn't much if any dust on the track. The 930 on the T100 had the rebore and brass sleeve 25 years ago and has had an air cleaner with regular filter changes ever since and is still working fine. Well over 30,000 road miles.

The only metal that can be used on both parts of a sliding or rotating metal to metal bearing is cast iron

The zinc on zinc is fine if the bike is used at least on day a week.
When they were designed tthe bikes were daily transport.
The zinc oxadizes and the zinc oxide is quite porous and adsorbs some fuel vapour which keeps it lubricated.
Only when they sit unused for months and over cleaned that the slides stick.
Just about all of the leaded copper base alloys are fine running against each other.
