Well, I finally got to scanning in the pictures I have of the Flash from the late '60s when Coburn owned it and Andy Lascoutx and I raced it.

David, this is what I promised six months ago!

Here's the link to the set I put up on Flickr:
http://flic.kr/s/aHsjy4Xwbi

I'll keep adding info that I recall or find, and please send me any corrections or additions, or add comments as you like!

Here's a sample from Mosport, June 1968:

We installed the fairing to run Daytona 1968. Coburn had heard that the bike was brought over in 1950 for the Daytona race, but DNF.

March, 1968 we qualified 58th at 113.8 mph, out of 77, and finished 28th.

The seat is off a Yamaha TD-1 250 production racer, what I was used to from my 250 ride.

Kurt,

Excellent shots! I have seen the Mosport and Daytona photos but I had not seen the early photos of the bike when it was cream colored. Coburn purchased the bike from Sid Dickson in December of 1964 as I remember. Sid had painted the bike a cream color and had put a Honda seat on it.It is great to see your recollections with the photos.

I still have the fairing which I believe is a Peel from the Isle of Man.I also have the TD-1 seat.

Thanks, David, glad you like them! I'll keep adding info, including your notes. Coburn has already commented on one of the 1966 Flickr pics in the set. That's great that you have the fairing and seat from those days. I did some body work on the fairing (it was heavy as I recall, like 1/4" fiberglas and thick gel coat) and painted it the chrome yellow, an implement color that was available only in enamel which tested my spray gun abilities, in the basement of the Watertown MA house, I think I was using a small diaphragm compressor and a low-end Sears spray gun. The seat must have been a spare from our collective TD-1 parts.

I recall at Daytona in 1968, in the pits, some of the Japanese race techs really appreciated seeing the bike, saying that the Flash belonged in a museum, not on the track, but there we were, qualified and finished respectably, and Coburn was gratified.

I believe this is Kurt at Daytona finishing the qualifying run in 1968.

Hi David, did you see this note from Coburn about how he acquired the Flash, (noted on one of the Flickr photos)?

"HI,,,I didn't exactly buy the flash,,,,,
Sid had a customer for a BSA,,,RR specs,,,and I had a clubman
SO I traded a DBD-34 clubman with a reversed carb adapter and a 1 1/8" monoblock,,,had unbelevable bottom end,,,
for the Flash,,,,seized bottom end ,,seized tranny main shaft,,
Sid delivered it in a whopping blizzzzard,,for gas money,,,
We both wanted the deal,,,the clubman was in top shape as I recall,,,
All for now,,,Ben"

In fact, the 1.5" GP that was on the Flash when you raced came from the Gold Star. The transmission was seized on the Flash. The Albion box ran steel on steel and Coburn tried to separate one of the gears from the shaft, but he put so much pressure on the assembly that he was worried that it would explode. Fortunately, Albion was still in business in the late sixties and he was able to order the needed parts and some extra gears for changing ratios.

Thanks for more history, David. And change gears ratios he did, late into the night at Daytona (1968), with basic hand tools and a vise bolted to a workbench in one of those open sheds in the pits. With the first gear set we tried, the close-ratio, first gear was too tall to pull out of the last infield turn onto the bowl.

Come to think of it, I may have ridden that DBD 34 Clubman in 1964, I think it was. A local mechanic name of Jay Boyer ran a shop on Cedar Street, Somerville, MA, and I recall that around that time Coburn operated out of Jay's shop for a while. Jay loaned me the use of the BSA for the weekend, I distinctly recall the reversed adapter that tapered at the end to accept the Monobloc. I'll have to talk with Coburn about it.

Two more photos of the Flash have emerged via a FB page about racing in Canada. Looks like 1967 to me, carrying my CMA Expert #74, but still naked with the Honda racing saddle fitted. Positive these were taken at the September 1967 FIM GP at Mosport. Notice someone kneeling in the back of the wagon, all bundled up -- it was a cold, wet, miserable weekend.

Can't say I actually raced against them, but I was on the track at the same time as Hailwood, Agostini, et al.

Winter of 1967-1968 I helped (a little bit) Coburn rebuild it for Daytona 1968, with the yellow fairing and the Yamaha race seat.

I just learned that Coburn Benson passed away July 14.

I first met Coburn in 1962 when a mutual friend flagged him down while he was riding one of his Vincents in Cambridge MA. Then we did so much together, and I worked for him one year at his Triumph shop in Haverhill MA, helped him rebuild the 1950 Vincent Grey Flash, then I was his rider at Daytona in March 1968. The last time I saw Coburn was on the farm in Concord MA, in 1995 or 1996 as I recall, and I've been meaning to get to Maine to see him ... too late.
