Hi, I’m trying to set the ignition timing on my 1970 A50. My manual (which is for an older model) talks about inserting a tool into an ‘aperture’ on the front right side of the case. I don’t see the same but I do see a bolt, the parts book calls it a ‘case seal’. Does the 1970 A50 have the aperture?
70 has the hole, it's threaded and has a plug rather than the earlier cover plate. Stick a narrow screwdriver in there and you'll find the slot in the crank.
Yes, that's it. I can only remember stuff about a week these days, but an allen wrench fitted in that slot- your timing pointer at the alternator rotor should match up, too. Go with that.
I don't see that you ever reported if you got that thing pumping oil.
The two holes where that nail can go, one of them is for ET ignition. There is a picture in the BSA manual which is which, I'm not near any of my stuff but google should find it.

Jesus, my computer updated itself now I can't do a link. The nail would have been in the front hole for an A65, surely A50 same but not sure. You only need that for your timing light, you can get it close enough to start.

Can't get your link to work Leon. However the hole closer to 3 o'clock (34 degrees) is correct for the timing pin on all bikes, A65s used to use the hole closer to 6 o clock (37 degrees) until around 66/67
