His shop was down the street from mine. I went to visit him to see if he still had the #44 Jorgensen Norton I saw race and win at Ascot in the 70's. Yes, he said, it's up in the attic in pieces. I told him I would restore it for him for free, minus parts, and he refused. As I would have. He wanted to do it himself. I was looking for a little exposure at the time and with Cycle world headquarters within a mile of our shops, it would have been really great advertising.
He did eventually restore it and Cycle World did a piece on it.
Try to imagine the sound of that beautiful bike howling down the straight quite a few bikes lengths in front of a grumbling pack of Harleys. It was glorious.
He told me that by the time he had finished developing the motor, the only original part on it was the head. Everything else he made himself.
Very talented and nice guy, I thought, even though he refuse the help I offered.
