Regarding glassfibre tanks. Wondering how many percent ethanol there might be in UK petrol and if there is some better than others?

From the Esso UK web site:

The majority of unleaded 95 Octane petrol sold in the UK contains up to 5% ethanol as required under the Government’s Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation (RTFO).

There is currently no requirement for renewable fuel (such as ethanol) to be present in super unleaded (97 grade petrol).

Esso super unleaded petrol (Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97) is ethanol free (except in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area and Scotland). We would therefore advise anyone who has concerns about the presence of ethanol in petrol to use Synergy Supreme+ – providing they do not fill up in Devon or Cornwall, the Teesside area or Scotland.

Our Synergy Fuels:
Diesel
Supreme+ Diesel
Unleaded

Kommando Thanks for reply! My question should really have been put this way: Is it wise to go to Britain with a glassfibre tank or will the risk of it melting be big? Will most of the glassfibre tanks been taken out of service, or does some use them without problem?

Most of the fibreglass tanks fitted new to BSAs are over 50 years old. Fibreglass tanks have a relatively short life, temperature cycles, environmental conditions and vibration cause failure. You are potentially only one ride away from a leak.

Thanks for reply. The tank in question is only a few years old bought from Burton bikebits ( and maybe better ).

I bought a fiberglass tank from Burton right before they stopped selling them because of problem. It leaked. I ended up using it as partial payment towards a Harley ironhead smile

EDIT: turns out I still had the emails from them regarding the leaking tank. Their response: We would be willing to apply a discount to the purchase of replacement. (later conversation revealed the discount to be 30%)

Also, remember that one single tank full of that stuff starts eating the glass and gums up the carbs with brown goo.

The UK banned fibreglass tanks from new bikes many years ago. The lack of durability resulting in petrol leaks onto a hot engine was the reason for the ban, long before ethanol in fuel.
I have a Greeves Challenger tank that has never had ethanol near it, the underside is soft and mushy so I invested in an alloy replacement

Another problem that led to the ban in the UK was the fibreglass tanks cracking open like an egg, in road accidents where a steel tank would just have taken a bash.
