It's supposed to be the lower Z-plate mounting bolt (yellow arrow as the clip is not fitted) however, as I hope can be seen from the photo, below, with the normal spin-on filter assembly fitted, the two standard length* return lines marked with the green and red arrows are both some distance away from the clip (or where the clip would normally be).

* Originally two 12" (063144) lines.
https://www.oldbritts.com/filter_mount.html

850 'A' models and Mk3 had one 10" (065393 engine to filter) and one 12" (063144) filter to oil tank line.

[Linked Image]

Andover Norton 'oil filter' parts diagrams have the feed and return oil lines mixed up prior to 850 Mk3.

OldBritts nearly has it right as 062200 is the feed, for 'oil filter' assemblies but they do list the correct two 12" 063144 filter return lines)

16 062200 Oil Line, Herringbone, Feed/Return, 17" 1
17 063144 Oil Line, Herringbone, 12" Return 2

AN at least seem to have got it right (Edit: Well nearly!) for the 850 Mk3:

16. OIL PIPE 10 INCH RETURN *PLAIN STYLE NOT HERRINGBONE* part-no: 06.5393P
17. OIL PIPE 12 INCH FEEDcry RETURN *PLAIN STYLE NOT HERRINGBONE* part-no: 06.3144P

so for a '73 850 ONLY the supply is routed thru the clip and NOT the return? mine is routed as yours is.i'm the original owner and ive had it down to "parade rest" several times in its life but i'll be damned if i can remember if it was any different as new.

From mid-'72 (so '72 750 from eng. 208754 and all 850) when the factory began fitting the spin-on filter assembly (or earlier 750 models that have had the spin-on filter kit installed in accordance with the instructions) there's no way either of the two 12" 063144* return hoses can pass through the clip!

*(later 850s, one 12" 063144 and one 10" 065393)

i just wanted to be sure i wasnt missing something. the biggest reason for doubt was the fact that the clip will hold two hoses, and its been 46 years.thank you sir!
