Fery,

Which camshaft number do you need? I have a few spare from the earlier bikes.

Great to hear of another survivor. The Gold Star Owners Club has only 105 early (one piece head) ZB34 GS machines declared and another 17 later (separate rockerbox) ZB 34 GS machines declared by their members.

Hi Gordo.
I can assure you that not all existing zbgoldies were gold stars. When nobody knew what a zbgoldie was quite a few got built.
At that time I was a would be dealer learning my trade.A friend of mine built 2 using standard parts We spent a lot of time studying parts catalogues.
Most parts were the same as standard b group, weld a couple of bits on the frame and you were away.
Sorry but if your bike is registered huy 208 it is not a goldie. Friend who built it is long gone.

Well, maybe since the end of may 106? Dependening how old Your “data” is/was ;-) or if you are counting engines or frame’s...

I have bought in may 2019 an ZB34 GS engine, found in a shed in the USA (not by me, so no further history available) it was fitted in an cb32 swingarm frame, covered in mud, used as a scrambler or maybe flattrack .....

Since the frame is used to build a big-fin goldie, the engine came up for sale...

According Ian Jackson ; quote” ZB34 GS 148 was despatched with a ZB32S 200-sequence frame to Rich Child Cycle Co, New York [the East Coast BSA Distributor] on 10 May 1949” unquote.

There seems no dyno sheet available at the goldstar ownersclub UK, but it had a first generation clubman head fitted when found, 9:1 hepolite piston, etc. And a pair of 65-2438 and 65-2436 cams..

I had it relined, because of a smal crack in the cilinder, by Phil Pearson. And am now in the proces of building up the engine again, to be fitted in a B31 frame for the time being and drive it to the international BSA rally in the Cotswolds UK this year
After the summer, i have planned to build a sort of ISDT replica, like the ‘52 works ISDT swingarm (although they used a BB engine ofcourse)

Without the correct frame it will never be original again, so a good reason to build what i like ;-)

Motolab: I used the data in the Apr 2019 Goldie newsletter. Some years ago when I was corresponding with Machine Registrar Ian Jackson about what my ZB34GS 5000 series engine represented he came to realize for the first time that the ZB32GS 6000 series and the ZB34GS 5000 series engines were unlike the previous ZB engines. In his tally he now calls them MK II engines to identify the ZB engines with the separate rocker boxes.

The BMS model listing shows the 1952 ZB32GS 6000 series as Clubmans and Racing and the 1952 ZB34GS 5000 series as Die Casting. The Bacon BSA Buyers Guide agrees as Clubmans for the ZB32GS 6000 (no mention of Racing) and switch to Die casting for the ZB34GS 5000 engines.

I believe that both sizes of the new engines mid 1952 model year were a switch to Die casting and that was part of the switching to separate rocker boxes. I would also think that they were still making the one piece heads for some models very late in the model year. It also seems that the B32/34 engines were being fitted with one piece heads in later years if one is to believe photo data.

As for what is a Gold Star I would think it is based on the engine. A GS frame with a different engine would not qualify and a GS engine is some other frame would be at best a GS special. However the factory was sending out ZB Gold Star engines is ZB31 S frames for scrambling, those would qualify as the real deal.

I have a '50 ZB 34 GS engine in a B31 rigid frame with a GS fuel tank. Ian Jackson checked the numbers and they were on the Gold Star dispatch list as leaving the BSA factory together on March 15th, 1950 and sent to Hap Alzina, San Francisco. This is an interesting model that has a high pipe similar to the later "Alloy Clipper". The oil tank has a cut out to fit the pipe close in. They had the Gold Star fuel tank and fenders.

Another interesting note on ZB's: Ian say the dispatch list shows the first ZB Gold Star dispatched in April 1949 as ZB34GS 105. The Daytona race that year was run in early March and Rich Child entered three ZB Gold Star's with a fourth as a backup.

The '49 Daytona BSA team left to right:

Hubert Simon, Tommy McDermott, Bert Perrigo, Gene Thiesen, and Rich Child.
