that doesn't really answer my question, how far below the top of filler neck is full ? I saw another thread that mentioned 6 inches , but that seems way too lillte oil to me based on where the decal was ?

Fill the tank to the specified capacity and see how far the oil comes up on the dipstick.

And buy another decal, mount it a bit higher than the oil level, you'll feel better.

Stepping on others doesn't make you stand tall.

What exactly about, "extend one middle finger and insert it into the oil tank filler 'til the other knuckles reach the tank top, correct oil level will just reach the tip of the extended middle finger" doesn't answer your question?

If you must have only your own dipstick and you need Airfix instructions:-

. Fill the tank until the level reaches the tip of your middle finger as instructed above.

. Insert your dipstick.

. Withdraw dipstick and mark it at oil level.

Or, if you bothered to read the rest of the linked thread, you'd see the later oil tank cap with an attached dipstick fits and is available to buy. If you need the part number of the cap with attached dipstick, look it up in a later parts book - e.g. linked from http://vintagebikemagazine.com/links/parts-books/.

Neither the oil level nor the decal position is an exact science.

The decal was fitted by someone paid piecework, not with a ruler.

Again, if you'd bothered to read the linked thread, you'll see that several other experienced long-time Triumph owners use the method I advised. Do you really think we all have exactly the same-length middle fingers?

Hi East End Rider

My very late model Daytona (actually a T100D) has a dipstick. The high mark is 2 9/32 inches below the base of the filler cap and the low mark 4 13/16. These equate to 58 and 97mm respectively in that new fangled metric system.

(For those who prefer a digital method my middle finger is close to 3 1/2 inches depending on how much pressure I exert on the adjacent interdigital web.)

Regards

Chris

What I do on my 60s 650 (very similar tank) is to keep the oil an inch below the hole where the oil returning to the tank issues from. If I have changed the oil I let it run round on start up and fill the sump to the correct level, filter, etc, and then bring it back up to the proper level in the tank.
