Hi All
I am looking to get a fresh tap and die set and what I found was from a common vendor to our hobby.
They offer a CEI Motorcycle set - bottom taps and the matching dies. They also include a fuel tank tap and a BA tap that is specific to most carbs and gauges.

I would need to add the 1/4 20 bottom tap to dress/cut threads for the coarse studs found in rockers and other odds an ends.

Anyone have any information on the British Tools and Fasteners kit? I am going to be using it at least once a week.

Much appreciated!

If it has 2 wheels I might need it.

Would that be British Tools and Fasteners in Lyons NY? If so it's about 10 miles down the road from me..I went over there with a friend who bought the trick epoxy for sealing fuel tanks...I know nothing about their taps but they sure don't spend money on decorating the place...LOL..

Unless I missed it, they don't specify if they're made of carbon steel or HSS. Carbon steel taps and dies are only good for fixing existing threads so it's well worth confirming they're HSS before buying.

That’s good to know, I’ve seen some Carbon steel taps being more expensive, I’ve also seen some cheap and nasty HSS taps. I now try and buy all mine from Uni-thread (uk company) even their engineering grade drill bits. Still end up with the odd one off eBay but I keep them for the odd jobs, best I’ve found off eBay have been from RDG tools.

If you are tapping or cleaning up tapped holes in aluminum, carbon steel taps are O.K. because there is little resistance in aluminum.

For use in iron or steel, get the best taps you can afford.

My Dad was a machinist and that was his advice to me.

Also use a good tap lubricant like "Tap-eze" to help with the job, and remember to back the tap out once in a while to clean out the chips. That lessens the chance of clogging the tap and possibly breaking it.

+1 for BT&F
+1 for HSS
For the obscure tap/die or for anything if you are in UK then I recommend Tracys Tools in Devon

I've got taps/dies from www.britishfasteners.com. No complaints.
