Hello All

I have been mounting my newly refurbished Petrol Tank to my frame and all has been going well so far.

I am having a problem with how to mount the knee pads with the screws thru the pad there are small access holes to get to the heads of them but are too small to go thru the small exterior access holes

Any suggestions or tricks to this ?

Ive found mounting the badges is a delicate operation especially over the newly painted and lined tank but am proceeding cautiously

Can't help with the pads but badge wise, if you can, allow time for. The paint to cure.
When it is hard, spend a bit of time masking the tank with some cloth or paper to avoid unfortunate scratches

...hello, the screws do not pass through the pad. They are short and the heads are hidden inside. Is a bad factory solution.
The old ones have CEI thread.

It's a frustrating job to attach the knee pads without first opening up the hole for the screw. So, that's what I do and what many have done to theirs in the past. I make rubber plugs for the holes, for appearance and to keep water out.

The strip bands are a challenge, too. Especially if you get a set from India. VERY sharp edges that need dressing right away to save on band aids. And could they really get the mounting holes THAT far off?
With some hard work, you can make them work, though.

Or if you're smarter than me, you've bought a set from Ace Classics.

Hi Anglo Bike

Thanks for the feedback yes the paint has been cured since around December and I have been using low tack tape to shield the bands. I have one side almost done.

Hi There reverb

what do you mean by CEI threads ? I guess I have no choice but to somehow enlarge these too small of holes and make plugs I think Ill need a leather hole punch or something like that. I don't want to just tear the hole out.

Hello Hawaiian Tiger

Yes this a real challenge to fit these I did buy these from Kevin Rushworth of Ace but even these bands had some sharp edges and I have been de-burring them with a Foredom tool and a fine 1/2 '' flap sander Ive also had to elongate the holes.
I remember you helped me find Ace Classics and they are the best. Shaping the Bands to the tank is not an easy task and my painter wouldn't touch them.
I haven't scratched the tank as yet and I think I made the correct move to affix the tank to the frame first (I'm building the bike on a rolling assembly cart getting the tank up so I can hold it and work on it
I see you have used a Royal Blue fill paint on the Triumph Logo, I was thinking black but the Blue is quite effective my paint is like yours and I believe Ace called it Blue Mink, I bought it from Don Hutcheson in Wakefield Mass.he called it Shell Blue
So I guess Ill enlarge the holes but the question is with what ? I guess Ill use a small burr on the Foredom,not sure if I can use a leather hole punch I hope make them without making them all ragged.

...the screws are CEI thread. 1/4 x 5/8 x 26.
You put the screws into the tank holes then put the pads over. The pads have metal bushes inside the rubber.

If I remember correctly, I heated a Phillips screwdriver and opened the holes with that. Crude but effective.

And believe it or not, that tank is an Indian one, very cheap and came with a parcel rack to fit.
The tank bands I think were also Indian and in no way or in any fashion did they fit without a substantial amount of work.
Since then the tank has sported a split near the front at the tunnel. I sealed it with superglue and it hasn't leaked since. (I was basically down to trying anything and this has worked for several years.
And since I ride the bike a lot, it has dings and scratches, etc. Oh, well. It still draws crowds.

That sounds like a good solution , i took a small bur to it and had pretty good results after cleaning up the treads with Whitworth taps

Ive heard about the Indian Tanks but yours is gorgeous, I bought a real one from Cliff Rushworth in London a little beat up for $ 650
I had it professionally relined in LA for $350, body and paint by Michael Fitzpatrick here in SB $500 Badges fromn Cliff $ 250

Wish I could post the progress but I find this a difficult site to post pics

Well I have a T110 1956 fork question
Its about the drain plug and its washer. the left lower fork tube drain plug i have, is tapped with a 1/4 " X 20 SAE bolt /new copper washer, it does not leak one bit
The right lower fork tube with new stock 3/16 Whitworth bolt ( drain plug) and washer leaks. Ive cleaned it and surfaced an aluminum washer etc but its still weeping
new stanchions, new sliders, seals etc
I'm putting 100CC 20W in each side, Ive tried a red fiber washer prior to the one Ive presently made from an aluminum electrical connector.

Time to bring out your magnifying glass and a bright light! But a liquid thread sealer should normally fix a problem like this.
150cc was the correct amount but open to experiments of course. I use multigrade oils for convenience, 15w40 or 20w50 seems to work well.

It may be too late now but with the kneepad warmed and some soapy lube the screws squeeze through those small holes easily. The India made ones fought me a little more, so I put a small chamfer on the underside of the screw head. Correct screws are pointed at the end, that allows them to penetrate the back of the pad, which doesn't have a hole when new.

This is why you FIT this stuff BEFORE you paint the tank (or paint anything, for that matter.)
Once you make it fit properly, THEN you do the painting.

And if you are working on these old bikes, you had better learn what the terms "CEi, BSW, BSF, and BA"
mean in relation to bolt and screw thread pitches, and number of threads-per-inch.

Is the drain plug you refer to actually a "Whitworth" thread? That is a COARSE thread, "BSW."
