Just wondering if anyone has an Ariel Cyclone rocker box for sale? Does anyone know if they are they the same as the huntmaster rockers?

Hi
I do not think there would be any difference between the cyclone and huntmaster rockerboxes
On the BSA A7/10's there are a few different part numbers but they all swop over, some may need a little relieving to clear the alloy head exhaust springs
Here is a link to an eBay huntmaster rockerbox

thanks John. I have an A10 rockerbox but was not sure it would be a fit. BTW - seems to me that Ariel had more "thoughtful" designs. The access hole in the rockerbox to fit the pushrods, ability to clean a sludgetrap without dismantling the case, and others

How can you clean the sludge trap without dismantling the crankcases?

Hi Cas,
I have not tried fitting either an Ariel rockerbox to a BSA or vice versa
Even though I have heard of BSA owners modifying the BSA one to fit the Ariel inspection cap or did they fit the Ariel rockerbox?

Trevor, Apparently there is a hole between the crankcase and timing case that lines up with the sludge trap plug on Ariel 650 twins
As to how difficult or effective the job would be to do, I do not know
Ariel singles have a removable (hex head) plug in the timing side flywheel accessed through the sump plate
so easy to remove and clean, I took the one out of my HT5 after 25+ years but there was very little goop in there
probably due to frequent oil changes, modern oil and a return line filter ???????

John

Hello John,
I have fitted an ariel rockerbox to an alloy head A10 with no problems. You need to use a couple of washers on top of the box to lift the head steady clear and possibly strech the slots in the steady plates. I see no reason why it cant work the other way round.

John, I just had a look at a Huntmaster engine which is sitting on my bench.
It is a 1954 model. There is no way the sludge trap plug can be accessed on this one.
It has holes in the case the same as the BSA A7/10.

Trevinoz, that's because in 1954 BSA supplied the bottom ends for Huntmasters and they are the same as the BSA A7/A10.

Cas, the internals are BSA A10 but the complete crankcase and all of the covers are completely different, as is all of the top end.
I know that BSA supplied them as Ariel was owned by BSA.
I can't comment on the later crankcases but it could be the case that they were modified to access the sludge trap but it would be very difficult to carry out.
Do you have photos of the later cases?

And without sending dirt into the big ends?

Hi Trevor,
Above I said

Here I am guilty of repeating something that I read "somewhere" blush

Later this year I maybe able to compare early and late Huntmaster crankcases as a upcoming project involves repairing an accident damaged motor

I think that I have a spare one lying about but it is missing the top plug.
Postage from Australia would probably be horrendous on top of the purchase.
I will do a shed search later in the day.
