I am rebuilding my Dad's 1967 A65L. I'm not quite to that stage yet, but I saw an advertisement for the Bob Newby Racing Belt Drive and Clutch for BSA A50 / A65, 500, and 650 cc unit twin.

I have to be honest that part of my interest in this is its simplicity. This would eliminate the loose bearings and oil leakage, etc. I started to add up the cost of all the parts to replace what was there, and it might be almost as much. It looks like I'm going to need a primary chain, chain wheels, and clutch anyway.

Does anyone have any experience with using a primary belt drive and dry clutch? Is cooling really a problem?

I took my advice from pushrod tom who races with one. I now fit them to all my A65’s wether be racer or road use. My biking buddy now does the same. My road bike has vented caps fitted but his doesn’t, no problems fitted either way. Just make sure you remove the tensioner and it’s bolt completely.

I’m a nut shell the best thing you can buy for an A65. It won’t slip, unless the screws are not tightened down far enough. And even then the clutch isn’t heavy. It doesn’t drag, and I’ve drag raced it on the clutch yet it still performs well. It just does everything that it’s supposed to do really well.
