Ran out of luck finding anymore “barn finds” of the British type. I did however find a 1973 Yamaha TX 750 with 2,700 miles on it for $600. It’s in good condition but engine seized. Got it home, found that I couldn’t get the valve cover off unless I removed the engine from the frame (Excellent!). Tore it down to the case halves and the condition of the engine was indicative of the miles on the odometer...nothing wrong here. Removed left side cover to expose starter chain wrapped around crankshaft. Fixed that with a small modification, and went ahead and replaced rings since I was already there. Couldn’t find ANY reference on the new rings as far as orientation. Gap and cylinder bore just fine.
Started the bike with the new rings, and it began billowing tons of blue smoke from both exhaust (common manifold). Took the damn thing BACK out, found left piston scraper ring installed upside down (bevel down). No other issues found. Do you guys think that having that ring installed upside down would cause epic smoking condition? You can actually SEE a fine coating of oil in the left cylinder. (All new gaskets, new valve stem seals, valve seats and clearances checked, compression 160/160) Thanks for any insight!

I don't know about the TX750 specifically, but on other bikes with an oil sealing/scraping ring, turning it upside down makes the piston into an oil pump, pumping loads of oil from the crankcase into the cylinder. My guess would be yes, it COULD cause that kind of smoking.

Not many people can or will take apart a TX750 and get it running right, so you will soon be part of a very exclusive club .... !!

Not shaft drive, if that’s what you mean. I think it’s Yamaha’s answer to the Triumph line. Apparently the Japs found themselves WAY behind, and just kind of threw this thing together in an effort to compete in the 70’s. It has the “Omni phase balancer” running off the crankshaft that was meant to reduce vibration as opposed to the rubber mounting method. All it really does is add weight, and dramatically increase oil temps to the point of destruction. I got lucky on this one, as it has had a modified oil sump to counter that problem. Really powerful and fun to ride, still need tires and have a front brake issue.

If you look at some of the pictures from the 2009 or 2010 TSMR you might see one of our own with his very nice TX750. From what I understand they are a nice bike if you can get them properly sorted.

Yep! Turned my eccentric to snug up the balancer chain. I’ve sent off a blueprint to a local machine shop to incorporate “method 2” of the oil filter modification I found on line. It’s simply a 2.5” diameter disc, but can’t find anyone to fabricate the darn thing. Atlana cycle works is working on a estimate...

The ring you found with the bevel down is the one you installed CORRECTLY. It's the other one that is pumping oil up the walls and into the combustion chamber. At least, if you mean what I think you mean by "bevel down". The largest diameter of the taper faced ring needs to be down. If you have run the engine with the rings installed, look for the shiny wear area on the ring. If that is at the bottom of the ring, it is correct.
