I don't own and never have owned a British bike. Have wanted one but... I came across what is said to be a 1970, the thing is the frame for which it is titled on and the motor numbers don't match. What research I've done puts the frame at Nov. 69- PC14xxxA65F firebird I think, and the motor at Feb.71 BE04xxxA65L lightning. So that is 14 months apart and I seen where 70's had some differences than earlier ones. Like 12 point base studs and recessed bottom fins at said bolts and the clutch cable came in through the top of one side or the other side cover. Well it has the 12 point bolts but not the clutch cable location. Do you think this is a bike that was put together with parts from 2 or 3 different bikes? It also has a decal on the left side cover that has the globe with rocket and says BSA big valve super rocket. I live in North Carolina and they are a title state and as such if it was made with matching #'s they would want them to be both the same. The bike is out of state and I could probably just take the title down and have it transferred. I think I will call DMV and see what they say. I know it's hard to tell anything without seeing pic's but I can't load them right now. If any of you want to comment I'm all ears of if you have a link to a good read on BSA's of this vintage that would be cool too. Thanks in advance Mead

Yes, PC is Nov 68 build to 69 model year, model years typically (but not always) ran from calendar Aug Model year -1 to Jul Year 0. So Aug to Dec model year 69 were made in 68.
BE is Feb 71 build to 71 model year

1st letter : 2nd letter
A January : C 1969 Model
B February : D 1970 Model
C March : E 1971 Model
D April : G 1972 Model
E May : H 1973 Model
G June : J 1974 Model
H July :
J August : To avoid confusion F.I.O. and L were
K September : not used, although it is easy to confuse
N October : letters C and G.
P November :
X December

The big valve super rocket was a pre unit A10 which was replaced by the A65 in 1963 so hopefully its on the bike just because a previous owner liked it.

Other that being not matching number bike this bitsa is a marriage of the best BSA frame and suspension with the best engine.
Picture would be beneficial.

I'm thinking that this is the Richmond bike?

If so, seems a decent deal for a good running bike, if what the seller says is correct. And that may be a little suspect, since he doesn't seem to know just what he has... I'd guess he didn't do the work to the bike.

I'm no A65 expert, but some things jump out here... TLS front brake, blackface (1970 or later ) broken gauges, pre-68 tank (smaller plastic badges), kinda awkward oil filter... This is definitely a mongrel, not bad looking though, will never be valuable but could be a fun and affordable rider. Though it does need a few bucks thrown at it, they'll add up.

Honestly, this one may not be an ideal choice for a first British bike, there will be a lot of head scratching with it.

Not your question but rolling chassis on 69 and 70 frames are identical. And different to 68 and 71

If you do decide to buy and keep this bike, make sure it gets a head steady if it doesn't have one. Here's why I say this: Pre-'71, the head steady goes from a lug on the front of the cylinder head to the frame below the headstock. This setup is not possible with an OIF ('71-'72) frame, so they moved the head steady to go from the rocker box cover to the frame backbone (which fitments do not exist on pre-'71 frames or rocker box covers).

Since you have a "dry" frame (pre-'71), you should go with the earlier setup. I believe the lug on the front of the cylinder head remained in '71 and '72, although it was no longer used.

'65(lower)/'66(upper, wheels, front end, controls)/'67(seat, exhaust, fuel tank, headlamp)/'70(frame) A65 Bitsa.

I guess I'm going to pass on it. I'm afraid I would run into trouble with the title. And it needs some attention like a headlight, gauges, fork seals and other stuff I'm sure. On top of that I'm in NC and it's in Mi. It is on Craigs list in Detroit. Maybe someone here who is already into them might be interested,he only wanted $2100. Let me see if I can post his ad. https://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/mcy/6714164286.html Thanks anyway guys Mead

The super rocket sticker matches the A10 tank that its stuck to.

Looks like an honest riders bike.
The little things like the thumb screws on the carb and the oil filter, things that riders do to their bikes & restorers shun.
Unless you know to provinance of a BSA it is always best to think of them as a rolling basket case requiring a full rebuild.
In 50 years of playing with BSA's I am yet to see one that the owner does not claim "just had a bottome end job done"
which equates to " changed the oil and removed the sump"

Looks like complete mongrel and needs a lot of TLC.
Not sure it is worth the asking price, needs oil pressure and charging system check.
All the small parts necessary to make it decent looking and working will make a nice sum of money.
