That was 2013 Mike and what an adventure thumbsup

Me & Marie running the last miles with the clutch on the TR5T that Ben had loaned us hanging on by a thread & a tank on fumes. Dare not stop to get gas because I knew there would be no way it would start again.

[Linked Image]

Being used to English gas tanks holding 4.5 & more US gallons those tiny US gas tanks did cause me some grief! Lucky to get 75 maybe 80 miles before reserve.
What reserve?
To quote the late lamented Mr Ben " You need to be in sight of a gas station if you go on reserve"
Most the way through Coudersport heading for breakfast we were almost in sight of a gas station when it gave up and No Name Bill had to push to the nearby Sheetz.
Later in the day I nigh on ran the damn thing dry again but did get to a gas station this time.

Unpacking the bags back at Greenspring I found some kind person (Howard Inough?) had stashed an empty bottle for use if I did manage to run dry again.

Richrd rode his Norton from Nebraska the first time he came. I missed that year as I was in Wales or somewhere. Too bad as that was the year it snowed! I usually trailer because I usually bring two. Or three with Rob's on there.

Geeze........I've only missed two. My trip is about 560 miles one way. I've ridden it once on my 1967 B44VR, once with Floyd's Velorex chair attached to the same bike and once on a 2010 Honda. Total for the weekend runs around 1200-1400 miles.

At the time an almost 50 year old BSA 441 unit single........made the trip twice and you fellers have an extra cylinder and a lot more CC's and you're worried about doing less that 300 miles????????

Gone and I guess forgotten......Gordon in NC who's STILL proud to be one of the BSA unit single guys

As much as i like distance riding, this is not the time or place. The problem is unpredicable weather. Both times I,ve been there its been a cold trip home. This year I trailered and it hurt, but it also was much more comfortable.

The other time Ben and I road through snow down to i80.

I hear ya Richrd..........................you have over TWICE the distance I do and you're also traveling East to West. Out of the three times I've ridden, two times it was 26-30 degrees when I left ( before daylight) but I'm traveling South so it warms up as the day goes on. 500+ miles one way is a perfect distance for me and an easy do.........I'll be there next year one way or the other. I've trailer-ed to the ride more times than I've ridden........but my BEST trips have been on two wheels. On the B44 it was two lane country roads...spread out over two days...a wonderful way to enjoy the scenery. On the 2010 RS........it was mostly interstate and even though it's a lot quicker....... to borrow a quote Royal Oilfield used about another subject ( chase truck ride) "It's sucks the life out of you".

Look forward to our paths crossing again Wade.......you and I didn't get off to such a good start but I do consider you "one of the good guys" and your always a joy to be around.

Mike Gordon.......I forgive you my friend. You are the kind of person that makes this site what it is.....and you're a true asset to the hobby.

As for this event/ride.......it is my absolute favorite. It really couldn't get any better. As for some of the lame excuses folks use to NOT make it......it's pretty much the same time of year EVERY year and in the same place. Making other plans is your fault. BUT........that said, keeping it on the smaller side does have it's benefits.

Losing Mr Ben left a BIG hole.........but I see this event as a way to honor him.

Gordon in NC

I think perhaps your only other trip was on the Wee Strom, the year Floyd was there and Fudge Girl got scared by the spider in my truck.

Now we're getting it sorted. I "think" as far as vintage.....I hold the record. But this is if I remember correctly that Semper trailer-ed last year.

I'm MORE than willing to give that honor up though........I think I can speak for Mike Gordon when I say EVERYONE is welcome. You will not regret it.

Adam........you'll be motel camping (very nice, clean, and very reasonable rates) so you really don't need a lot of gear. To quote another of my heroes Dick Harris, "If you do your work at home you don't need to carry a bunch of tools and spares" unfortunately for me I've never been a mechanic so I have to carry a BUNCH of tools and spares. Sounds like fun, you and a buddy riding vintage in.......consider it. Got to sorta like living on the edge and be ready for anything that could happen......but with a buddy along at least you'd have company. MOST trailer......so you'll not catch any grief if you decide to go that way.

Proud to still be one of the BSA unit single guys.......Gordon in NC

I think I'm guilty of a false assumption Rich. I wasn't there that year as I said. Gordon still leads the distance on vintage category...

So...on the subject of excuse planning...interesting you should bring up, Wade, the plentiful potential events next year. I mentioned to Sharry that the Superior ride is scheduled for the same time as the Coudersport one and she said "Oh, that's too bad. One of your vacations is interfering with another one". I sense a little sarcasm there...

You want to talk about weather, that'll be something to talk about on the north shore of Lake Superior around this time of year .... ! And better get out the Scott Of The Antarctic gear if you're thinking about camping in it!

It was my first time successfully making this trip. I can attest to the fact that your name came up more than once during the weekend.

Richrd did a fine job representing for the Beeza singles crew!

So it's all planned for a next year, we will truck our 2 Triumphs to the motel and go from there.
Probably showing Thursday, not Friday to make it little longer.
If life won't interfere certainly.

As long as we're on the subject, I've been thinking about moving the date up a week or two, to say the first or second weekend of Sept, rather than risking the sometimes dicey weather that can occur later in the month. Are there any other big events going on around then?

Might not be a bad idea, Mike. The TSMR is ALWAYS the first weekend in May after Mother's Day, so maybe something similar in September?

First or second weekend after Labor Day? Second might be better as it's a short week after Labor Day. It would probably help for those trying to go but need longer-range planning options.....

My .02,

Steve

Yeah Lannis...I mentioned that when I was first invited but apparently there are conflicts for some. Tom and Shaun? Mike, if you move it to earlier in September then my problem doesn't exactly go away. It becomes a different one. How long can I be away from home? Like I have said before, I'll try to make it whenever you have it.

Well, you're the guy who makes ALL the events, all the Internationals, all the memorial rides ... maybe there's a limit somewhere and they start crashing into each other; you may have found it.

As we say, it's a "First World Problem" ... !
