3. What size deep socket do I need to remove the nut that holds the brake assembly?

The cable clips around the mounting point. Flip the clip off then pull the entire thing out where the clip pivots

And the brake rod is a tight sliding fit on the square shaft so a gentle tap wil drive the pivot into the drum releasing the lever.

Get the part number for the nut then look it up in the Stainless Fastners BSA Triump fastener guide that you downloaded saved and then printed out.

partially fit the nut before tapping the end of the brake cam, the nipple end will soon get destroyed if you don't. sometimes a bit of maintenance spray and a good waggle of the lever frees them off, some are as tight as a......

Hi Tracey,

14-0303 aka 3/8"UNF aka 3/8"-24.

Fwiw, I fit 3/8"UNF stainless dome nuts to keep crap and water out of the grease nipple (and thus the brake cam). I replace the large o.d. washers with stainless so they don't go rusty where the nut scratches 'em. smile

Dome nut fitted loosely over the nipple can be tapped with a hammer to release the lever from the cam without damaging the nipple. thumbsup

Hth.

Regards,

I used one of these to get my brake drum levers off recently. They were a very tight fit, probably never been off before, the puller is a battery terminal puller from Machine Mart . I had to lightly file the puller teeth to a slightkg thinner profile to get under the brake lever edge. The puller was around £10.

This is why I love this place.
Neat idea that I never would have thought of.

The puller head is even indented to the same shape as the grease point, couldn't believe my luck ☺
