I have a 500ss cases with 650 crank and barrel with 650ss head ,commando cam ,new followers ,
it used to run great but it vibrated badly, so I had it balanced and rebuilt it ,now I get a clicking coming from the left
side exhaust, it only clicks when the valve is returning back up off the cam ,ive pulled it down numerous times and cannot find anything wrong ,the valve is not hitting the piston ,the pushrods are seated correctly and are not hitting anything I have had several people look at it and lots of ideas non seem to work ,has anyone had this problem ??its coming to the stage when I may burn it as its a witch

I've told you, i'll give you $100.00 for it, but you'll have to deliver it to my house. (I wouldn't risk riding it.)

Nick, as much as I find your generous offer reasonable I find that burning it would generate more beer tokens

Have you inspected the cam (profile), and the cam followers ?

I had a cam where a 'bump' had worn strangely flat, and this caused a clicking noise in running.
We suspect that maybe it had been coilbound on that valve, and had worn the cam as a result..

I've heard of someone who had a cam follower that clicked with a higher lift cam.
Always make sure that the followers are free to travel over the full length of their action...

Have fun !

Hi Baz ...If you fail to get a satisfactory answer from this forum ... shoot off an e-mail to Les Emery at Norvil in the UK ... his e-mail appears in their web site, Les has a technical helpline ( by phone ), but he also answers e-mail, there is not much that Les has not come across in his years with Norton motorbikes.

Good luck.

Does it make this noise running AND when you turn it over not running ?
Is it really loud, or just a faint click ?

The cam followers were quite free to travel up and down in their tunnels ?
Or a rod(s) touching a spiggot ?
A valve is not tight in its guide is it ?

This is a commando cam and 650 crank in 88SS cases, the conrod bolt(s) couldn't be touching the cases could they ?

" have a 500ss cases" ?
1.very late model accepts large diameter crank?
2 still twin chain motor (magneto/rear points)? or highly modified to single chain 20M3S style?

Norvil after market 2S grind on twin chain core? only useable up to 20M3 (I have some of these 2S, 4S, & 7S)

"it only clicks when the valve is returning back up off the cam" not sure what this means? valve lifting?or valve closing?

650 barrels? have you checked 650SS barrel lifter bore for sufficient lifter travel clearance for 2S lift? I would expect a jam and bang upon release.
Granted the 2S exhaust is only .015 more lift than the SS(std cam) If I figured it correctly these have the same cam base circle diameter.
Using a base gasket?

Dave, i think that may be it (lifter travel) when i had a quick look at the old animal i didn't know it was a 2s cam he was using.
The thing with baz is, he sticks whatever he has on the bench in his bikes.................................then can't remember what it was.
You can feel a definite click at the rocker arm when turning the motor over and the cam /valve starts to return from full lift.
I suspected piston/valve contact but he's checked that and assures me it's ok. The springs are not going coil bound, i checked that.
The motor uses 2 chains with a mag substitute housing and EI. It has a base gasket.

I think the follower travel is the answer.

what Nick said, but ive changed the followers twice and at the moment there are 2 pair of NEW followers installed and they seem to be ok ,Nick had ground the ex. piston pockets to make sure they were not hitting the valve
the bike ran fine before I had the crank balanced ,(bad vibration)

When was the 2S (Combat) cam installed in this saga ?

So, have you investigated if the follower(s) make a clicking noise at the top of their travel ?
It doesn't matter if they are new or not, since they'd travel slighter higher than the stock SS cam,
that'd be the prime suspect ??
