Sharing 2 images, one recent & one from The Archives- and some thoughts:

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

I love traveling the old US Highways and seeing leftover signage from. places long shut down, and still-existing "mom n pop" type places. The history of Americana and our love of cars & mobility can be seen along these old, lesser used roadways where places like Kwik Shoppe Drive In continue to thrive. I also love riding my motorcycles on rural roads, seeing the trappings of regular working & rural folks & simpler days.

Looking at social media or watching TV, it is easy to feel like we are separated from one another, but if you turn it all off, and get out and talk to people, you begin to feel connected again. If you pulled up at a counter in a diner somewhere along a US Highway, and Mr Hoover was sat beside you, a conversation would naturally occur. Any perceived differences would melt away. Rufus Hoover could easily be my grandfather, or your uncle, or somebody we have all known.

We've come a long way, but we aren't all that far from a time when folks like Mr Hoover were our neighbors; haven't gone so far that we cannot recall a day when we'd hop in the car with mom and dad to go get ice-cream on Sunday at some roadside drive In. This imagery recalls days gone by. Yet the fact that it's all still right here, remind us that tho we've come quite a ways, we haven't gone so far that we cannot see the past in our rear view mirror.

Out today for a ride... Just sort of meandering around, at times almost going in circles not really knowing exactly where I was heading but knew vaguely where I was and pretty much where I wanted to go. I was on the *cough cough* R100RS *clears throat*

Didn't take a whole lot of pix but did get some shots of cool stuff along the way...

like this snappy little1951 MG:

which was sharing space with a lovely old Bentley

[Linked Image]

Of course I was riding along the railroad tracks going upriver. Not sure what was going on but the rail yard was filled with locomotives, and trains were all over the place heading up, down, and across the river. So I stopped to get some pix of some...

At the rail yard

and further upriver, near Duncannon PA

Further along the ride, a nice small-town reservoir/water supply

Thanks for looking.

Hanging out at Wade's for a while today... took this one & only cell phone pic; had to climb a ladder to get the best perspective on it.
Nice to see Wade, Gerry, and her sister + family.

Loaded out the Mecum Auction in Harrisburg PA today. Just about zero bikes there, and a few cars being. loaded out back by the time I got there.

Got a few pix but nothing much. Will work on them and post a link probably later rather than sooner, but here's a teaser pic (one I like) in the meantime.

Couple more car pix from Mecums the other day. One of the Mecum guys I spoke to said they pretty much stopped trying to sell bikes in Harrisburg, but said that cars sell very well- rumors had sales at roughly 80% which is damn good- looks like they might extend the auction next year in fact.

All the pix I took were of cars waiting to be loaded up, out back, as I was d riving in to go to work.

Hers' a very sweet 55 Chevy:

The mystery car is definitely a Chevrolet. Forty-nine to fifty two. The wheelbase is too short for a pontiac or olds. The steering wheel looks like it is from a 55 Chevy, not original.

SO..... (hee hee)

FINALLY had some free time yesterday. It was hot out with a threat of rain, but what the heck, can't sit around waiting for the weather or you'll never go anywhere. So I uncovered The Big Rig and took it for a jaunt. Miss C had an evening out with one of her BFFs, so no pressure to get home any particular time. Didn't get off til later on had a couple errands 1st thing, was near'bouts 1:00 (1300) before I got out the driveway. Saw some mildly interesting stuff, worthy of stopping to get some pix, and spent some time near to some clear, cold spring and mountain waters... was wishing I could get in, but in the end, I didn't.

First order of business was FOOD. Popped down to Carlisle to the Hamilton Family Restaurant and had me a couple Hot-Chee Dogs and a glass of Iced Tea.

[Linked Image]

Headed out into the country afterwards, wasn't sure where I was going but the front wheel is pretty good at leading me around so I was content to follow along without giving it much thought.

[Linked Image]

Ended up going thru Newville, PA and followed along the Big Spring for a ways- just being near that cold spring water made me feel wee bit cooler in the 85 (F) degree heat.

[Linked Image]

Funny but it's been so darn hot lately that at 85, it really didn't feel like it was all that hot! Kinda cooled down to 85, I guess. Anyway, it was lovely summer's day and I was happy to be out in it, on my bike.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

From there I wandered down to Shippensburg, and ran up over the mountain at Big Flat, turning back towards "town" onto PA route 233, stopping at the Adams/Cumberland county line to visit a sweet little mountain stream called Tumbling Run.

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

Kinda cools you off, just lookin at it, yes?

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

stay tuned for more....

From there I back tracked a couple miles and hopped over another ridge, heading towards Arendtsville, PA rte 234 and The Narrows, a nice windy section of road that follows another mountain stream, making my way over to Biglerville. Riding east out of Biglerville, I was surprised to see this alongside the road...

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

By now the sky was getting pretty dark back to the north. A quick glance at the radar showed a good sized storm cell moving n quickly, so I back tracked a bit in an attempt to skirt it. I was mildly successful, in that I only got a "little" wet, but in all this heat a little rain certainly wasn't the end of the world, so what the heck.

[Linked Image]

No worries!

By now, as you may imagine, I had a pretty good thirst worked up. I closed the loop & squared the circle by swinging over to Boiling Springs to see my old buddy, Michael the bartender.

The light on the lake was so awesome tho, I had to get a pic before going inside the tavern. I held off. on going back to the bike to get my camera- there was a woman taking photos of her ballerina daughter there, so I grabbed a couple quick phone pix of the lake and crossed the street, ducking into the bar hasta le pronto.

[Linked Image]

I had a couple beers and held court at the bar for a while until I decided I'd better eat something while I was there. So I had a grouper sandwich to help soak up some of the beer, before heading towards the house. Oh but while I was sitting there, a young lady came up and asked, "You're Tom Banks, aren't you?" I said Yep, sure am. And It turned out that she is the now-grown daughter of some friends of mine, I've known this fine young lass most of her life! I met her boyfriend as well, also a good kid. I asked her to please give her parents my best wishes, and saddled up, riding home int eh warm summer night....

The tintype photographer guy from Gettysburg, Rj Gibson was on hand. He intinded to do some shooting but the light want right for his vintage camera...

[Linked Image]

[Linked Image]

he did get one shot off tho...

[Linked Image]

Loads of great vintage bikes, mostly American Iron, but a mix of other stuff as well. There was a great family vibe to the whole thing, I mean there were ACTUAL families in there, BOWLING with their kids and whatnot... BUT the bike show people all seemed to know each other so there was a lot of chatting and laughing together. Load of of people came thru and we had fun talking to folks, hangin gout and making the scene. Lots of crossover between this crew and the oilers Car Club of Race Of Gentlemen fame, so lots of familiar faces. It was a good time!

I was out on the street at one point taking pix, and a guy I know thru Wade who was coming to the show tapped me not the shoulder to say hello. Couple minute later, somebody I've worked with over the years walked by with his children- just up in the Brooklyn mucking about on holiday! he was so face-out-of-place, that it took me a few minutes to dial him in... but it was fun to see him and just goes to show that anything is possible and the world isn't so small. I told Cynthia about bumping into people and she wasn't surprised- she thinks I bump into folks I known matter where I go in the world!
