(1974 t150 } the book shows tappets with a flat on the shaft and a large hole thru the block. mine have neither, there is a small hole drilled in the side of the block that appears to go nowhere.

Is there any harm in using what was in the bike, or should they be replaced?

The '74 parts book shows oil feed tappets for the early pressure-fed tappet blocks which were not used on the later triples.

Some twin cylinder tappets have the large hole but drilled side to side not front to rear as shown on the drawing so those holes shouldn't be on the drawing at all.

Not anymore, I have a block of wood I drilled shallow holes in many years ago, when I remove tappets and push rods I put them in this block of wood so when I put stuff back together they all go back in the hole they came out of. Maybe unnecessary but I think the parts that bedded in together should probably stay together.

When given the choice between two evils I picked the one I haven't tried before

When the tappet is hollow you need a hole to let out the expanding air as you attach the stellite pad. Other wise the air would have to escape through the same surface you are trying to attach the pad. This will upset the bond.
It is a common practice when brazing or silver soldering a tubing where there is no place for the expanding air to go as you weld the joint.

As shel said, you must re install them in exactly the same location and orientation - unless you are having them surface ground, then it is not critical. If you don't get them re surfaced and mess up location/orientation then the bike can suffer from increased follower and/or camshaft lobe wear.

You should blue the tappet surface, install them, turn them against the cam then check the tappet face. That way you can check the tappets are running square to the cam and the curvature is correct - not running off or not wiping close enough to the leading/trailing edges. Only needed for a carefully built motor.
