Is it Manx Norton Or Norton Manx?? Most say Manx Norton and Mick Walker's book is Manx Norton. Did somebody take out an IoM Manx cat in the 40's thus the name??

From what I understand the motorcycle was made strictly for racing and notably for the IOM races, hence the name. Manx Norton.
No matter what you call it, the bike will always be legendary due to the successes it racked up in all manners of motorcycle racing.

Manx is a term that means "of the isle of Man". It's English, or Welsh, Someone will come along with a nice little story of how it came about.

Cheers,
Bill

In the 1930s, you could buy a racing Norton from the catalog - an 'International' to 'racing specification'.
There was a long list of goodies that would be extras - a racing magneto, flexible oil and petrol lines,
pukka racing seat, race tyres, alloy fuel tank, lockwired bits, blah de blah de blah.

And gearing to suit the IOM, if requested - incredibly tall.
1st gear was about the equivalent of 3rd in a road bike.
The story goes that these were pencilled in as "Manx" spec,
and after the war these are how they were labelled in the brochure.

They were built up in the Race Shop in Bracebridge St - the road bikes came out the Aston Brook St entrance.
Oh, and the factory looked at your racing form, and decided if they would sell you one.

These days, there are more replica manxs about than ever went through the factory gates.
And cnc machining and modern materials mean they go harder too...

It's Manx Norton as "Manx" is an adjective. However, Norton Dominator as "Dominator" is a noun. Simple grammar.

Manx is the name for the language of the Isle of Man, an inhabitant of the Isle of Man, a breed of cat and also fudge as well as the Manx Norton.

Will be sampling the fudge shortly.

Because you're an American so do not speak conventional English?

In English English “ you park in the drive and drive on the road”.
All about context and usage.
Actually I don’t envy anyone learning English as an adult.
How about the three totally different pronunciations of the following three words only differing by one letter?
— bough
— cough
— dough

Thank God I was brought up in England to speak English!
I am useless at other languages.
In the course of my life to date I have lived/ worked/ holidayed in about 120 countries.
I have always got by with justEnglish.
If they don’t understand you then just speak English louder!

Actually the "drive" is what you drive up to to get to the house......

How about this: ghoti? Pronounced "fish" - gh as in rough, o as in women, ti as in notion.

One of the beauties of English is that it has stolen so many words from other languages so generally has many different ways of saying essentially the same thing but with different nuances.

But back to Nortons!
