Greetings Norton experts. I just bought a van load of Norton parts including an almost complete engine, gearbox, primary from a 1959 Nomad. I have two questions:

1.) The seller claimed the stamped engine number (282813) was a factory stamping error and the first number 2 should not be there. If I search Norton engine numbers leaving the 2 off the engine comes up a 1959 Nomad. Does anyone know about this stamping error? (To the right of the engine number is stamped the number 15 and around the corner is stamped 99 above 3155. I would be most gracious for any information anyone has about this engine given these numbers. Thank you in advance.)

2.) Upon stripping the engine down I found one piston to be a .020 oversize and the other to be a .030 oversize. After 60 years of working on car and motorcycle engines I have never seen different size pistons in one engine! Any ideas? (I mic-ed the pistons and yes, the oversize stamping on the top is correct.)

1. All the factories made the odd stamping error, the best way to check if your stampings are genuine is to compare them to other 59 Nortons and look at the way the stampings have been applied and compare the fonts for each common number.

You would have thought as 15 was for Nomads and 77 then the engine would have 77 stamped on it but 99 is valid

The number 99/1343 is the engine shop number.
So for internal factory use only.

You are missing a P stamp for 59 so have a look for that.

2. All that shows is an idiot rebuilt the engine during the last 59 years or those were the only pistons available at the time.
