oh, dear.

"Are bikes so nice as all that?" asked the mole, shyly...

"Nice? They're the only thing," said the Water Rat Solemnly, as he leaned forward on the handlebars. "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- half so much worth doing as simply messing about with bikes."

Regardless of crossing the border or not, or the complexities thereof, if thats genuinely a 1949 Model 18S thats the 1st one I have ever seen (or taken note of, anyway). Generally regarded as like rocking horse droppings ??

It doesn't show or quote the engine number though - and it does have the later forks and front brake arrangement,
so could be a 1950.

If it was closer, I'd go and have a look, just for sheer interest.
With a good clean up and some TLC, looks like you could ride off into the sunset.
Hereabouts, folks would be asking $$$ for something like that, its a funny old world.

My idea of restoration for that old bugger is new handle grips and a bit of wire for the rear guard. Mine looked like that and I loved riding it but for some stupid reason I thought I would do a resto. Pulled it down all the way and that was 30yrs ago. It sits in my shed in a number of crates, just a real shame and the stupidity of youth.

So why don't you look at putting it together again ?
Parts are readily available these days, and mostly quite reasonable.
Plenty of knowledge about too.
Its not a 49 swingarm is it ??

Indeed.
And a good polish.
AMC were renowned for the quality of their enamelling,
(they had bought Sunbeams prewar, reportedly purely to learn the secret of their high quality finish)
(Sunbeams had been in the enamelling business since the 1640s, I think is the date bandied about)
so it would probably still polish up to a real gleam.
And some air in the tyres !
There are a few parts missing though - cables, battery box, a few stray bolts.

My 49 rigid 18 came with every trace of original paint (enamel) stripped off, so I had to find a
few nos bits to even see what the original finish looked like. (a very high gloss of a deep dark black).
I would love to find a tank like that bike has, with all original fittings and pinstriping and all...
They are only original once....

Sorry Rohan slightly misleading mine is a matchless. Yes 49 swingarm, however the candlesticks got swapped out for jampots. I have never really chased a number match but it appeared pretty untouched when I got it. Everything is there except piston. Probably 1 1/2 bikes.
I think about it more and more but it is a big task everything has been dismantled. The big end has been reassembled and that’s all.

Crikey, 2 swingarm 49s unearthed in one day !
We won't hold it against you that yours is a Matchy...
They have a lot in common...

Have you ever seen another on the road. ?
While we should probably avoid the term 'rare',
since it has $$ signs attached to it,
they are decidedly uncommon.

btw, do you have a parts book for it ?
