I've been looking at this well used bike on eBay...It looks reasonably complete and the owner does actually ride it often.. I also live in NY, but Brooklyn is a 375 mile trip one way....

Worth 4100 ???

79 Triumph

My Ducati? Not for sale, I just dumped 280 bucks into a billet clutch drum and new plates......I'm selling the Honda cafe racer I built.....I think the Triumph is a $3000 bike...All you pricks selling Triumphs for more than they are worth has inflated the market ,lol.

just checking.

i lusted after that model when it came out. cast wheels, 2 into 1 exhaust. went to my dealer and said, will that electronic ignition fit on my 72? i hated points. he just laughed at me.

now i don't mind points so much.

i have no idea what i'm doing.

I had a chance to buy one around 1982....It had been stored in a shed for a year for unknown reasons...The guy wanted about 1500 bucks.... seemed like a lot of money for a non runner back then..
I still find many bikes for sale without legitimate titles or transferable registrations...Trying to sell a supposed road worthy bike for decent money without papers seems a bit funny to me....
Wow, Harley's racing down this narrow hilly rural road at high rates of speed...I gotta go outside and check it out...

Since it is a '79 T140D Bonneville Special, I have to say .....go for it !

That has always been one of my most favorite Triumphs since I saw my first one as a teenager. $4100 in today's market for a nice example that is running and appears to have been maintained well seems fair to me. Back when I was 22 or so, I was very close to having one for $400 but someone else got it thumbsdown

Is the bike really nice? It looks pretty original.. Is the paint faded or a satin repaint? I just emailed the seller asking a few more questions...

IMO, it's nice....maybe even really nice. It is kinda hard from the pics to tell but even the chrome looks kinda dull in the pics. Maybe it's just the guys camera as the tank looks original otherwise and seems to coincide with the dull look of the chrome.

Prices always seem to be less on the east coast, that would be a steal over here on the west coast.

The video shows a lot more detail, looks like that bike has spent a lot of time outside maybe even close to the ocean breeze.

The seller said the bike has the original paint...It;s spent a lot of time in New York City as his daily rider so it's seen it's share of weather. The fact that the bike is still be used means something..I am going to buy it as soon as the seller gets back to me about when to pick it up..We both live in NY state but it's a 700 mile round trip and driving into NYC is a pain in the butt...I appreciate the opinions !

you should try driving through NYC in a 71-foot semi.

trucking companies advertize "no new york city" to attract drivers who refuse to do it.

I grew up in NJ close to NYC, I left in 1973 when I was 25.....We used to go into the city for whatever than drag race side by side through the Lincoln Tunnel at 100 MPH..

The bike, I bought it and will be driving down to NYC on Friday ,about 7 hours one way, plan to get there around 8 pm to avoid traffic...Pay the man, load the bike onto my truck and head back and take a nap in a rest area...It's my birthday present to my self, I'll be 71 in July.

I have fond memories of Rutt's Hut, maybe I can stop there on the way home..

Looks like to me that if a man was an independent trucker, he'd just charge extra for the additional time and hassle to drive into the city.

If it's a trucking company, is there no way to pay drivers a premium for what used to be known as "Hard Lying" for sailors? Seems if it's just a matter of having to spend extra time in the cab, that paying for that would solve the problem.

Of course, if the company or customer is not willing to pay extra for the extra time, then eventually the only ones that will be doing it will be unlicensed, illegal drivers ...

you're right. my company required us to run NYC and long island, but paid us $75 extra to do it.

but its not so much time as trouble. you can't get a 53 foot trailer around the corners, there are lowbridgez and dead end alleys everywhere, there is literally nowhere to spend the night if you run out of hours, there are human predators in the parts of town where the trucks have to go, and tbe industrial culture is sometimes abrasive and easily offended. one guy i know of refused new york loads because he was mugged at the destination. a friend of mine drove up to the loading dock once to discover tbat a previous driver had shot a robber to death and was waiting for tbe police. he waited around tbe corner for an hour to let things settle before he went back in.

but some companies like NEMF specialize in it, and lots of freight has to go in.

the last time they sent me to new york it was the morining they were evacuating for hurricane sandy. my delivery was to the battery before noon, but i refused to go in because it was in a red evacuation zone. later that day it was under water.

.

i have no idea what i'm doing.

Should have. Check for three wires from out of the primary to the rectifier.

Also originally had Lucas Rita electronic ignition - grey-/ally-coloured 'box' behind the timing-side sidepanel.

Hth.
