I resisted the urge to nitpick three times. From Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary:

vice : moral depravity or corruption : wickedness

vise : any of various tools with two jaws for holding work that close usu. by a screw, lever or cam

So although "vice grip" may be a more appropriate name for this device, it's actually vise grip (which originated as a brand name BTW).

In UK Mole Grips was a brand name for vise grips.
Over the years it became a generic description for any make of vise grip.

i used to use an old silver dollar for that, kept it tucked in my helmet lining.

sometimes made a dent in my head, but i was never broke.

you brits would need an old crown.

No fitting that in a helmet. A silver dollar could be traded for a 20.00 dollar bill easily in a pinch.
