G'day friends,
Re: a 1951 Plunger Framed A10
My mate picks up his engine from the engine re-conditioner today and we plan to fit it to the Bike on Sunday.
We're wondering if the gearbox (bolt on) can be fitted after the engine is bolted into the frame ? .. or does it have to be fitted to the engine beforehand ?
That's about it for now .. thanks for your help .. Charlie ..

Thanks for the detailed reply Sluggo, your fitting tips will come in handy ..
I've just found out from a long time BSA man ( thanks Trevor ) that the gearbox HAS to be fitted to the Engine before it goes into the frame so can you can now sleep soundly mate ,knowing that you are correct :-) ..
The reason that we wanted to fit the two parts seperately is that the gearbox has a couple of issues that need attending to and we won't be able to get at those for a week or two.
At least we'll be able to do some work on Sunday ... fitting the head, rocker boxes and maybe some of the timing side stuff ..
Best regards from Australia mate ... thanks again ...

Try a GSX1100 (GS1150 in the USA) they are really heavy engines.
If your frame is newly painted get some foam pipe lagging and fit it over the frame tubes for protection

BSA B31 500 "Stargazer"
Greeves 200 "Blue Meanie"
Greeves 350
Greeves 360
Suzuki GSX1100 EFE "Sorcerers Apprentice"
GM500 sprint/LSR bike "Deofol"
Jawa 500 "Llareggub"
Aprilia RSV Mille "Lo Stregone"

Kawasaki ZZR1400 "Kuro no senshi"

Also remember to install the right hand front engine mounting plate on the engine , before trying to put the motor in the frame !!!

Elijah.

NO you cant fit the bolt up gear box after the engine.

the reason is that it is absolutely impossible to get at the top 2 bolts while it is in the frame.

Cheers men ..
At least we won't have to worry about scratching paint as this is a 'keep the patina ' restoration ...where nothing is re-painted..
My Norton Big Four sat for over 50 years in an open shed in the North West of Scotland and was covered in surface rust... I painted it all in Black Molybdinum Grease and left it for a couple of days. The grease soaked into the rust and after a wipe off of the excess, left a real nice finish ... worth a try on your rusty bits ..
