NickL lad, you're SPOT on with that.... laughing clap bigt

Barb lass, don't even mention Wilkes-Barre when I'm about, it sends a cold shiver down me spine, the brewery there brewed an Ale the name of which was my surname, I was coming over and thought I'd pop in, so I contacted the brewery, find out if a visit was possible. Got hooked up with a woman there, who started to haunt me...A very strange thing, as it was all done via Email... shocked

She eventually got the sack, and thankfully I lost contact with her, she was definitely a bloody Bunny boiler... crazy

I'm pretty sure there was ONE phone call when you were trying to set up that brewery visit, that was enough to do it! You were looking over your shoulder for weeks behind that, she wasn't going to give up ....

My Wife is from Texas where her family still lives.
Regional Dialects being what they are I am always worried that one of these days I am going to look out the window and see a Y'all Haul pull up in the yard.

In Texas "y'all" is a couple of people. "All y'all" is a bigger group.

Says I'm from western NC. Close enough.
My parents met and married in Hickory, NC.
Mom's family came to SC mid 1600's from Ireland. Some bastard named Cromwell scared them off.
Dad's family came over later, settling in NC.
Dad had a little Kansas in him from his mother. His accent always confused people.
I grew up in Knoxville, TN, where they settled after WW2. Got a bit of a, "Southern accent," but not real east Tennessee like Dolly.
Accents are unique to a close area, not a general region of the country. East Tennessee (Dolly Parton), is different from NC (Andy Griffith), is different from Charleston SC, is different from Atlanta, etc..
Guess if I'd have called a sugary, carbonated beverage a "Coke" they'd have pegged me as living in Georgia?

this accent stuff is interesting. i left america when i was 9 years old- oklahoma and kansas-- and grew up in polyglot southeast asia, among the poms, scots, kiwis, and ozzies, plus english-speaking chinese, filipinos, malays, indians of all kinds, the germans, dutch, most of the nordics, arabs, italians, czechs, south africans, canooks, and on and on. in england i associated strictly with the brits out in the wilds of surrey. a friend of mine was a brit living in pennsylvania, he had the american accent, and i as the actual american spoke only english english. my accent changed to mimic whoever stood in front of me, and still does.

but in terms of dialect, this thing pegged me right in the middle of the chickasaw nation in Indian Territory, where my chickasaw, cherokee, swiss, and english ancstors all found each other and did the wild thing 150 years ago:

[Linked Image]

i have spent just a handful of years in oklahoma since the brits were still making change with farthings, but my dialect was apparently fixed in place before i was 10. plus, the three cities that were most dissimilar to me are tbe ones on either side of where i've lived for 15 years. apparently dialect is not connected with accent at all, and seems pretty immune to change.

I was sure this "test" was complete BS, but it nailed it! (Just like the NY times does with most reporting...)

It named one city 50 miles from where I grew up, and two cities within 30 miles from where I live today. And these locations are 1200 miles apart!

Rick E, I hope you are not a true believer of everything you read in the New York Times.,
or the Washington Post, or the Associated Press.

All three disseminate and distribute what we now know as "FAKE NEWS."

The cover has been blown. This quiz is a top secret project of the NY Times to gather information on where you live. That way they can send you targeted requests for donations to Hillary's 2020 campaign fund. It's great we have such vigilant citizens to expose this "fake quiz".

I do my best to apply Critical Thinking. Terms like "Fake News" are best left to those who enjoy the scent of a "red herring" or those tossers of said fish.

This quiz is freaky accurate. Grew up in Alexandria, VA - but spent time in Baltimore and went to high school in central VA - with a stint in the Navy over in Tidewater. Even though I have not lived there this century, my dialect is pinpointed between Baltimore, Newport News, and Richmond.

Weird.

My result has me coming from somewhere called 'Yonkers'.
I thought that was the manufacturer of a particular German aircraft????????

Nowhere in London is called 'Yonkers' so they are at least a few thousand miles out!

i just took that test. It has me located between Aurora, IL and Rockford, IL,
which is EXACTLY where I grew up, and where I still live.

I'm amazed.

My results are pretty wide from Columbus, Georgia to Raleigh, North Carolina and Baltimore, Maryland. But, I guess that is close enough since, from childhood until I moved to Vermont 12 years ago, I spent 95 % of that time in the south. My home state was Florida with 3.5 years in North Carolina (Asheville and Fayetteville - Fort Bragg) and 1.5 years in Georgia and oddly enough.... Columbus, Georgia at Fort Benning to be exact !

Yonkers is a city just north of New York City in New York state ....I grew up in nearby New Jersey so I know the accent well.....Not exactly the accent I hear when talking to a Brit.....Or an Australian.....
NYC city accent example "I need to tawwk to my friend from Lawnguyland to axe what soder she wants to serve with the vawdka at the parwty tomawrow."

Nick, my result was Yonkers USA, also. Wonder what it's like? I'm an Aussie born and bred, but my dad was a Pom. The only time he was anywhere near Yonkers was in 1921 when his ship took on a load of motor cars.

1954 Norton Dominator 88 (current project)
1969 Triumph Bonneville
currently 6 other non-Brit machines
past history includes 11 Brit and 13 non-Brit machines.
Some impressive and some just silly.
