I've a '67 A65LA, first sold in the US in '68, with -Y on the motor serial number. Someone mentioned a thread on -Y number A65's, but I can't find it. Anybody familiar with this?

Here you go. Interesting reading. I'm 100% convinced of the tax scheme.

Hi Bill,

IIrc, plus a quick skim of some posts, it's bikes with '67-looking numbers but suffixed by just "Y" - no dash - that cause the consternation; "-Y" simply indicates the bike had had a particular modification?

If my memory is working, your bike should have '67 features like British Standard - Cycle and Fine - threads, 5/16" barrel base fasteners, etc.; otoh, a '70 bike has things like Unified threads, 3/8" barrel base fasteners, etc.

Hth.

Regards,

A bike that is a 67 with -Y serial number indicates the start of 3 port oil manifold for sure. There were a number of other changes that occurred seemingly with the -Y serial number, but the 3 port manifold was big one.

Wasnt this also when the factory started fitting 6CA points?

There are some 69/70 Y bikes out there, which could be the tax hype one

However those bikes signifying an X or a Y was used to denote a different warranty period, just barmy why the used the LA designation but who knows for sure, the 69/70 bikes with the Y are deffinately 69/70 engines and frames

I have never seen any reference to the -Y bikes being the start of 6CA points.the major change is the 3 port manifold and a minor change seems to be moving the zener under the headstock on bikes with batteries. 6CA points are major change for 68.

Don’t confuse the OPabput the X & Y bikes. That can be a sh!t storm in its own right. He asked about -Y, don’t confuse the man grin

That was on B25/B44's, never seen reference to it on the twins for that particular change.
