Sorry, i first postee in the general english bikes section, i repost it here

Hi there !

I had problems with the 4th gear, and after opening the gearbox, it appears that the fixed gear on the mainshaft has a broken teeth, that falled down in the gearbox sump, and blocked the camplate when going down to 4th

So, now i need to replace that broken gear, but on my model (first production year - 62) the mainshaft 68-3008 has this gear directly fixed on the mainshaft ...

One year later, the mainshaft is 68-3100, and the gear seems removable

Do you think that i can exchange my broken 68-3008 mainshaft with a 63' 68-3100 ?

I can't find the older 68-3008 one on the net, while it's easy to get the later 68-3100 model

Any experience on such compatibilities ? They realy look the same, i suppose it's possible ?

Thank you !!!!!

The fixed gear on the mainshaft (the top longer shaft) is 1st gear. On later models I think it is a different ratio and presses onto a spline. Are you sure this gear isn't just pressed onto a spline? If it is and you cannot find a replacement with the same tooth number, you could replace both main and lay shaft 1st gears for the later type. I think you will find its pressed on otherwise the other trapped gear couldn't be assembled.

The retired mechanic who takes care of my bike had some gearbox spare parts. He replaced the mainshaft with its fixed (broken) gear by the later model, and also had to change its brother, the old one had 31 teeth and the new matching one has 26. Everything is fine now, the bike works perfectly !
