Hi all. before i start pulling things apart again I'd like to know if this makes sense.
I fitted a new piston and rings to my B33 - the old rings had an enormous gap and piston scoured, tho it ran well enough and did not smoke on starting.
Now if left of a week it smokes very badly for 10 minutes. not neighbour friendly.

to test, I let it sit for a week, removed the pipe and carb and saw no oil draining down valve stems even when kicked over a few times, but it smoked badly on starting.
Then a week later I drained the sump - about 200ml came out, and no smoke when started.
So I figure the extra compression of new rings is forcing more oil out of a wet sump OR I messed up the ball and spring somehow, tho i don't recall touching them.
Plausible?
tho I didn't think of 200ml of oil as a lot.
So what to do - replace ball and spring?
get better breathing?
the smoke does clear so I assume the pump is scavenging OK, tho could be worn in the gears so next replace that?
or...?

thanks

Clean/replace the ball and spring in the timing cover, clean the inside of the hole it fits in. seat the ball using an aluminium drift and a small hammer

I'll give it a try Andy
would 200ml of sump oil typically be enough to smoke badly on a B series?
cheers
