My friend and I are working on his assembler's titled 1968 original BSA 650 chopper. It came from California, and appears to be an all original, survivor from the late '60's, and was probably a '67 or earlier engine and frame, as it has AMAL Monoblock carburetors on it. This bike hasn't been started in about 22 years, and is missing one of the large capacitors/condensers under the right side cover that feeds the old style points plate.This has no battery, zener diode, rectifier, or anything that we can see to regulate the output of the alternator. It must use the large capacitors under the right side cover to fire the points. It also has condensers on the coils, which I suppose is for noise suppression. We did get spark out of both coils, by swapping the wires from each side to the one capacitor, and will source the 2nd capacitor to get it running. I fitted new points to it yesterday, and it has three toggle switches on the left side frame, by the front of the swing arm, and one is not very good. So, we will replace all three switches with new ones I ordered from Radio Shack online, as they were discounted rather well!
The bike is really cool, with a Tracy Nelson The Fiberglass Works painted tank with two eagles facing each other with their talons stretched out in battle. The rear fender has what appears to be a lady eagle on it, and the red white and blue theme is pretty awesome. I know that The Fiberglass Works shop sold kits the chop older bikes, back in the '60's and '70's, I believe that this is a kit from them, or perhaps they built it for the original owner. Someone evidently spent a lot of dough chroming everything on this bike. The springer front end is likewise pretty cool. I will post pics of it, if I can figure out how... perhaps I need to add pics of it in the gallery, as I can't see any way to add attachments here! Tell me what you think!

My first Brit bike was a 1967 Norton Atlas, quite the machine and the metal fatigue from vibration was legendary... the second one was a 1968 BSA650 Thunderbolt, used one of the Norton's Monoblocks to replace the Concentric, and it screamed to well over 105 mph. They were very good handling bikes although they each had quirks hehe. The Norton had so much low end torque that it would lift the front wheel easily with the throttle. This one here, reminds me of the fun I had working on each of my old Brits.

Don’t be harsh, I thought it was quite neat... I was watching an old evil kenevil advert on YouTube yesterday, it was a toy where he rides different vehicles... even shows you riding his chopper! Well anyway it reminded me of that so made my day.

It is a cool old survivor... but, not everyone can appreciate it, as Andy has stated. He would probably like the '65 BSA Lightning in my friend's front window of the shop. He rode it in there 25 years ago, and they put it in the front window and there it has sat... all original, and red & chrome tank, side covers, etc. But, this chopper is a survivor also, just in a different way. Still has the Conti TK111 rear tire, and Pirelli front 3.00-17, we changed the Pirelli to a new old stock of the same ribbed tire, and we are going to try to get it running.

I will take some pics of the coils and the condensers on the ignition side, we haven't opened up the left side case yet. He will be open next thursday, and will post them then.

when I was younger I had something like this, not my style these days
but as far as “what I think”
the sissy bar and pad have got to go!
They just look cheep
I would replace those strut bars with shocks and replace the rear frame loop
it might look good to incorporate the loop and new sissy bar
if that is a fiberglass gas tank DON'T PUT GAS IN IT!
Modern gas will ruin your tank if it isn't 'treated'

Welcome -- lots of potential there -- I like it, well, except for some things here and there smile

Starting long-sat bikes, I like to pump some oil into the plug holes to coat the rings, and when you remove the valve cover to set the valve clearances, I like to pump some oil onto the stems/guides, among other things ... no doubt you have your own start-up procedures.

Hi Dennis, it is quite the bike, and I know about the fiberglass not being able to stand the gas, the paint is quite the formulae, and it would be the shell left after the modern gas disintegrated the tank lol. We have plans to line it after thorough cleaning with new resin, and hardener. The sissy bar isn't that great, and the pad was skinned from one of the white Naugas, they were prolific in the '60's and '70's... The strut bars were interesting, but don't think there is enough travel with the fender mounted like it is for shocks. The original owner had chromed just about everything but the frame on the bike!

I squirted some penetrating oil into the cylinders first think, the compression was down on the right cylinder, but after soaking for a bit and some more oil, it cam up to around 105psi. I haven't set the valve clearances yet, but I will take your advice to do that onto the valve stems and guides, as they are no doubt dry.

"Original chopper" is an oxymoron - each chopper is by definition unique. This one lacks one or two common chopper features of the day, one being a truly rigid frame as opposed to the strutted swingarm (although this setup has a better chance of being straight than a welded-on hardtail). The other would be a 15" or 16" rear wheel with a big fat tire, to offer some modicum of rider comfort.

If you have enough bikes to keep one as a curiosity or a showpiece, this would be a good one. If you plan on riding it, I hope there are a lot of very smooth roads where you live.

Hehe I live in Toledo, Ohio... the pothole capital of the Mid-west. Not a chance of NOT hitting one on a ride. Yeah, what I meant by 'original chopper's that it's not a current build, but one originally from the period of the late '60's when they had their popularity in California. I did notice that they didn't do a true 'hardtail' on it, and I believe that's because they kitted it out with parts from Tracy's The Fiberglass Works. The tire is a 4.00-18, not really a chopper rim and tire, but looks well on there.
My oldest brother had a 1956 pre-unit Triumph chopper, hard tailed and a Harley rear wheel. The front end had a 8" over forks, and a King and Queen seat with a little patch of mushrooms on the side... also a sissy bar that came up to a bend and tapered the last 6" to a point, with a Maltese cross taillight. I rode on the back once, and it was a literal pain in the a**.
I am sure it would be more of a curiosity than a daily rider, or a nice period showpiece, for someone lol.

the pre-unit BSAs make good looking choppers too. this one is a pretty formal example, not a lot of departure from the formula, but still a very nice-looking machine.

I see you are from Ohio also, do you live near Toledo? I agree it is a classic period bike, and I would leave it just as it is, not repaint or do anything more than clean it up! The brake looks like it leaves a lot to be desired, as it is a narrow rear wheel brake and no front one. Not sure about the kickstart, except the bolt is just inserted, not tight. That's a nice looking pre-unit!! I agree!!

nope, i'm on the other side of the state, by wheeling, 250 miles.

don't worry about the brakes. it will never ever stop worth a damn, so just leave lots of following distance. choppers aren't for practical transportation, they're a philosophical statement that defines an era, like riding a goldstar.

when the kickstart return spring in there breaks, the kickstart lever flops down. yours may just need to be rotated back up into position with the cotter pin tapped in correctly.

some parts appear to be older than 1968, like the smooth rocker cover. is there a trapdoor on the left side primary cover to let you see the alternator rotor?

by the way, when i say that they weren't *practical transportation,* i didn't mean that you can't use them for that. practical just wasn't their main purpose, in the same way that a lamborghini countach isn't as practical as a ford festiva for going to the grocer.

Hey Charlie,
I agree, that bike is a testament to a bygone era in the world of motorcycling. It's the type of bike we would've called a "semi-chopper" back in the day.
They were usually built by guys with a lot of enthusiasm and vision, but not a lot of wherewithal. I was 19 & in the Navy during that time when choppers were king.
It's the type of bike I might've tried to build on a sailor's pay. Chrome shops in SoCal were still plentiful and "chopper kits" were advertised in all the bike magazines.

To quote a passage from an old Richard Brautigan novel: "He built me with loving care. Leave me alone. I'm a monument now to a good a** gone under".

In short, fix whatever needs work to make it safe to ride, & leave the rest alone.
Hope you are able to bring that old rascal back to life!

The very rough, rolling basket, '68 A65L chopper that I dragged home earlier this year had the frame cut in just the same spot as yours. The difference is that on mine the PO must have changed his mind and welded the tail pieces back on (not quite straight). I assume it once had struts like yours, but the shocks were back on there when I got it. Interesting -- I wondered why my frame was cut and re-welded. I guess his rear end didn't like the struts.

You know what they say. They are only original once. smile This is definitely 'original'. There is value in preserving stuff like this.

This is a great time capsule. I'm not a chopper fan and wouldn't make one. You could convert this to a beautiful pristine standard condition bike, but It'd be just like all the others out there. Preserve it!

It's a pretty cool bike, I saw that whoever built it, braided the wiring from the headlight switch on the frame to the twin headlights, with a 3rd wire... to make the 'braid'. You don't see that stuff done anymore! I am amazed at the build, definitely done by someone in his garage, and a labor of love.
I appreciate all the comments, guys and will update you on the running condition! And Henry won't mind if you thought he was a girl, he purrs just as contentedly...
And kevin, you must know where Nelson Ledges is then, and that triple nickel highway down in your neck of the woods! I frequent Nelson Ledges race course during good weather, and the triple nickel highway is like a mini 'Tail of the Dragon' lol.

I have to agree with that Ray, as each year passes I start to think more and more like this. I think if you buy a particular bike which is rare then it is nice to restore it to factory catalogue original. Buy something which has real age and patina then keep it as that too (like all original but aged), buy something which (like I did) rolling chassis and bits of an engine and build how you feel. I’d have put mine as it rolled out of Small Heath had I even had a photo of how it looked but I have little or no providence so I made my own.

There are a lot of standard common models out there and something like this (despite it not being something I would own) has patina to it and is unique.

I have more pictures of the ignition, we found a condenser which was on a Mallory ignition from a Model A Ford! It was in the basement of a good friends shop. Also, some pics of the wiring and coils.
There is no inspection cover on the alternator side, but there are two plugs side by side. I will post the link to my Flickr page.

A65 E C 742 - What year and model would this designate?

As an uneducated guess I’d say a 65 hornet with close ratio box, unless there are any other letters to add. I’m guessing the numbers are not on a raised pad?

Had a look at yer pics Charlie. Your bike has later 6CA ignition points plate ( a good thing), looks like ET coils ( Energy transfer), correct for a Hornet. I strongly recommend this link for ET info

The ET needs a specific alternator / rotor set up MM explains all. The later points should play OK with this, but the advance and retard mech for the points cam would need to be the earlier type, the ET only works over a smaller angle of advance.

The pictures do not show a raised pad, on the side of the engine case. Does this mean that they are replacement cases that have been re-stamped? Also, no other letters that I can see.

So... the bike started as a 1965 A65 Hornet! That explains the ignition and large condensers. Appreciate the info bodine!

I will look at the link gavin, and see what I can figure out. I have a feeling it is all just poor connections, as the wiring is in pretty poor shape. The spade connectors all need replacing or at least a good and thorough cleaning. I have some brand new toggle switches of the same type, and will replace those first thing. I found the wiring from the stator is from behind the primary case, and was able to trace it up to the coils....which don't look like they are in the best shape lol. The condensers on the side of the coils are pretty rough, I am thinking of pulling everything apart, and cleaning the heck out of it all.

If you looked at the pictures, did you see the Mallory ignition coil for the Model A? Now THAT is old school lol. Also where i got the 2nd large condenser by the points... Oh, and the draft is from the Great Lakes Brewing co., Edmund Fitzgerald Amber Bock....

another vote for leaving it alone. make it run & ride it. truth is, you may not ride it much because chopin' a BSA really makes 'em a poor handling machine compared to what they really are. thats probably why it sat so much. but, no point spending money on that one trying to put it back. it is kinda cool as is, for what it is

i'm building a 650 track bike for nelson ledges right now.

555 is a bit to the west, but i run 536 whenever i can scrape up the time. went by the north junction with 78 three times the day before yesterday, but i was 71 feet long.


i have no idea what i'm doing.

Kevin, have we met yet? Have you been out to Nelson Ledges since they repaved it in June? I ride an RD350 race bike I built there, and also a VTR250 Interceptor. Was racing in the MotoSeries events under Todd Karam. Sam Wang is running the LEAN track days there, and Fred Wolfe (the Voice of Nelson Ledges) is now the track manager. I was hoping they could get someone to front a racing series there, especially a 250 class with endurance racing. It is one of my favorite tracks! I am still hoping it happens before I get too old. But, my friend Bill Bloom was still racing up to two years ago, and he is 83 or 84 years old now, so God willing I have 20 years yet wink I used to help him in the pits, and have kicked over his 1974 Z1 with the 1080 kit in it, at over 13.5:1 compression lol...
