I've got an early '71 type frame which is all good except for the side stand lug
It's ripped straight out down to the frame tube.

Now I've repaired these in the past with a chunk of mild steel and a stick welder, with very satisfactory LOOKING results.

But that was on frames that I then sold on.
I've no idea how well my repair actually lasted for.

This time it's for a bike which I'm going to keep and use.
Will just welding on a chunk of steel last long term ?

Sounds like a good time to make a nice, well braced side stand lug repair! With drawings and pics posted here...
Maybe start with a piece of half tube matching the frame tube? A triangular brace for vertical rotational load would be good. At least you have a bare frame and not a finished bike to start with.

How does Norton or BSA do it? Any better?

Thanks for that.
Those weld on lugs are made from mild steel TIG welded to the base plate.
I'm going to have a word with the toolmakers at work with regard to the relative merits of TIG welding the lug compared to stick weld.
Point taken about vertical bracings, no mild steel lug is going to be as strong as a drop forging the same size.

Note that a review refer to needing to add washers as spacers for the Triumph side stand to fit.

Sure as long as you don't start it on the sidestand, leaping miles in the air.

I spotted some genuine Triumph forged lugs online.
The only trouble is that you have to cut them in half to get them around the frame tube.

When all is said and done, I think that I'll just fabricate my own and spend the £30 on something else.
Point taken about not using the kickstarter while on the side stand.
Previously I've just stuffed a chunk of steel into the gap where the old one had been ripped out, and filled up the gap with weld.
This time I'll remove all of the old lug and make a split ring to fit around the tube.

TIG weld will give you less distortion much better weld than stick, put a little weld prep on the lug that will give you good penetration into the parent metal should be strong enough to kick start on the side stand,oh and make sure all paint and oil has been removed smile

Cheers Dave
