Recently the NZ BSA MOC won best stand at the NZ Motorcycle Show. They had a great 'barn find' theme going with a bike in rusty bits, a semi restored Hornet and a fully restored Lightning. This was supported by some great bikes. They took home $1,000 for their efforts.See the images at;

The 750 twin looks lovely. The barn find bike took a bit of working out, the motor minus cyls is sitting in the frame upside down. Probably something they will need to get sorted when its restored.

Great show, and great pictures!

One thing has me puzzled: That very lovely '67 Hornet has side panel decals that read "650 Lightning Power". Would that ever have been correct for a Hornet? I'm only asking because the rest of the bike is so original (except maybe for the TT pipes, but I believe even that was a common option).

I believe the "TT" style pipes were OEM for the West Coast Hornets. Likely Gary E will correct if I'm mistaken. That always surprised me, being a fan of the high pipes myself, and a left coast person.

It may have to do with the kind of racing that was going on in various regions. I have a picture in a book of two Triumphs and a BSA (probably a Hornet), all in the air going over a mild jump, characteristic of some of the TT scrambles that were put on back in the 1960s, where there were also some long flats, sometimes with paved sections. All three bikes in the picture have TT pipes. One of the Triumphs is jockeyed by Gary Nixon.

Hi Mark, What book is that? I'd sure like to see the jump photo. Years ago when I had an unrestored A10 spit stored, I realized a photo of a local racer here showing him in the air, was an A10 Spitfire. He was a confirmed GS rider, and when I asked him about that bike, he said it was a Spit, and he'd gotten rid of it as fast as he could! He said it didn't hold a candle to a Gold Star. Anyhow, those shots in the air are great! I've never had the guts even if there had been an opportunity.

KC, the book is named "The New Illustrated Encyclopedia of Motorcycles", edited by Erwin Tragatsch, copyright 1979, revised 1992. Big hard-cover. I found it under a pile of books at a used book sale I don't remember how long ago.

I'm woefully low-tech (especially for a retired software engineer), but I do have a scanner, and I'll see if I can scan and upload that picture.

If you trawl around period literature you regularly come across NIT against an obsecure marque .
NIT = Not In Tragatsch
Apparently Erwin took himself way too seriously and believed he had included every motorcycle maker that ever existed.
There are 4 editions, each one updated with more marques that were missed in earlier editions.
Latter on, I think it was the Vintage Club put out a short lived soft cover called NIT with a pile of stuff he overlooked, like 120 of the Australian motorcycle makers and a similar number of USA marques.

Mark, no that's not me. That is Jim Guthrie and his son David from Auckland. Total BSA addicts and 'top shelf' people! Without them the BSA scene wouldn't be the same here.
Yes the Lightning power transfers are correct. This is a West Coast Hornet that I restored a few years ago. The TT pipes are as per West Coast model.
Barncobob, Its time you re visited NZ. Most visitors thoroughly enjoy our 'laid back' attitude to life, underpopulated roads outside Auckland and with a good British bike fraternity you wont be disapointed!
KC, No there is no Ethanol that I am aware of here. I run my bikes on a diet of 50% Avgas and 50% 98 octane. The Triples in particular love it!

I have been responsible for the show since its inception some 6 years and 5 shows ago. It is a fundraiser for my Rotary club and this year we raised $190,000, all of which goes straight back to our local communities! It started as a Classic Motorcycle show and just grew like crazy. I'm very proud of the show and what it contributes to 'life'. It makes me feel good!
