Hi guys,

You remember my T140E? I'm just getting her running to sell (don't ask). Trouble is I torqued the head down and need to do the tappets but can't find my piece of paper that I wrote the clearances down on. Trouble is, she has E3134's on 'R' followers inlet and exhaust so the clearances aren't standard. I'm screwed if the collective wisdom (John?) can't help me out.

Set them to 4 thou inlet and 6 thou exhaust.

I suspected you'd ask and show me up.

Standard for those cams in a 650 was 2 and 4 thou. The American agents changed their recommendation to 4 and 6, sometime in the 1960s, reckoning that a gap that won't close up between service intervals was more important than the chimaera of "mechanical quietness" that the British factories pursued.

Excellent, thanks! I got in touch with Grin as I got the cams and followers from him and he told me 2&4 which surprised me so I was interested where you got yours from. I do like the idea of quietness, but it is such a pita to get to them, I'll go for 4&6.

2 and 4 is "correct," and will work fine, but 2 isn't easy to measure if you're not an old Triumph hand, with a good ear. The valves have also been known to sink in a little and close the clearance up.

I run my inlet E3134 in an overtuned iron head 650 at 8 thou clearance and that actually helps idling and slow running, but I don't go around suggesting that people should do what I do.

...in my T140E engine with the STD inlet and 9989 ex I use 8 and 4, so why not you to use 2 and 4? in the T140s measuring is very simple with a filler gauge.

A bit counter-intuitive to some, but the larger clearance of the two is used on the inlet cam.

This is a true statement.

Not applicable to your T140, but even more important now that soft valve seats on the mid-60's machines are being run in a lot of locales with no-lead fuel. Those earlier model valves will tend to tighten due to valve seat erosion.
