Yes you will need the full letter from an approved source, it also needs to state the bike was despatched direct to the UK and Nova does not apply. They insisted on that with me last year even though the bike was registered just a few months after it was made. The DVLA are muppets and the exact opposite of civil servants.

The TR3OC T160 records only go up to frame no 05943 (24/7/1975). If you have a T160 built later than this, the machine registrar will have to contact DVLA on your behalf to try to obtain historic excise duty classification for you, if it’s not shown in the log book as an original 1975 UK registered motorcycle.

'R' is 1977 (August 1976 - July 1977)

Why would they? confused DVLA are not triple, or even Triumph dating experts. With respect, this is hardly new, DVLA put in place a procedure when the rolling cut-off date was reintroduced, so it has been known about for some time.

The TR3OC is on the DVLA list of approved owners' clubs - http://www.tr3oc.com/archive-machine-dating/uk-historic-road-tax/ and http://www.tr3oc.com/archive-machine-dating/ - contact registrar@tr3oc.com.

Then just pay the VED 'til your bike is reclassified? It'll be refunded.

With respect, you got someone who was making it up as they went along. Changing the classification from "Bicycle" to "Historic" has nothing to with NOVA (Notification Of Vehicle Arrival), which has to with the "First [UK] Registration" of an imported vehicle; the aforementioned http://www.tr3oc.com/archive-machine-dating/ webpage shows a copy of the document supplied to the DVLA by the TR3OC ... mention of NOVA?

Hth.

Regards,

Yes.

On the 1st of August each year until August 1998 when it changed to every 6 months (initially 7 months).

Edit: It seems some of the registration plate sites (such as the one below) are attempting to change history and have 'R' as '76 but it's not correct.

Vehicle registration certificate (V5C) – this must clearly show that the vehicle was made or first registered before 1 January 1976. If you do not have a V5C, or if you think the age shown is incorrect, you will need to produce an extract from the manufacturer/factory record or an extract from the appropriate ‘Glasses Check Book’. Dating certificates from a vehicle enthusiasts’ club are not acceptable to change the date of manufacture for an already registered vehicle.
(If the V5C indicates that the vehicle was registered from 1 January 1976 up to and including 7 January 1976, we will let you register it as a historic vehicle, based on the assumption that the vehicle would have been made in the previous year).
