hey

i'm a curious person

where i live has been the mildest winter since i've been keeping records. i saw a frog hopping across the road at 0300 on 24 december, and although it's been up and down since, this has been the Mildest Winter in Ohio since i came here, in 2003 or so.

what is your experience, there on the other end of the gulf stream?

In Deepest Darkest Derbyshire - dry, dull, low cloud, 20mph SW wind, 48f (windchill 38f)
Motorcycle riding will come with time, so I am told.

By the time it gets to the British Isles the Gulf Stream is known as the North Atlantic Drift and is the reason why the climate is mild and wet in the winter even though it is at 50 degrees north latitude. That's about the same latitude as Winnipeg but the weather is a mite different!
Ocean currents determine climate word wide, ... Ala El NiƱo.
World wide, climatic areas are classified using the Koppen Climate System. Interesting, if you are into that kinda thing.

Shaun, lad, don't you ever learn?
We do not use f-temps on the continent.
We use the Napoleontic C's.
So go pollish the f off your crab peeler and tell the nice gentleman it's 10 dgr.C in Reims.
And no need to tell him Reims is in France because everybody knows Reims is in France. crazy

You been hauling champagne from there? whitewine

Ger lad, well sod that funny 'C' temp thing I'm now all done for the day, 30 Miles from Dijon, where they make that weak mustard. And its 46f according to the truck's temp gauge, which I swapped for American measurements.... wink

A box of Red vino has been opened, and a couple of glasses have been quaffed, its the weekend at long last, just a 9hr break and a 7hr drive, and I'll be at home with my loved ones. Might even have engine news.... shocked

Once we're out of Europe, we'll have proper measurements again, pints, gallons, feet and inches. And best of all, Pounds shillings and Pence, we all knew where we were when we had 12 pennies to a shilling
Sod your 10 to the 100 lark... eek

We got all kinds of funny names here.

We have French Fries, but the French would never touch 'em.

We have Belgian Waffles that I'll bet never came from Antwerp.

We call "Chop Suey" that because we imagine it came from the Far East but it never did.

We call it a "Dutch Treat" if your date has to pay for her own dinner, but I'll wager they don't do that in the Netherlands or the race would have died out years ago.

And what about the fine soft "Corinthian Leather" in the old Chrysler Cordoba? Nobody makes leather in Corinth. Even Ricardo laughed about that afterward.

"German Silver" was invented by the Chinese and COPIED by 19th century German metalworkers (bet you won't see THAT in many local history books).

So there's not much in a name when it comes right down to it ....

I would never said anywhere but Delft in the Netherlands, it's been hundreds of years, though ... so who knows?

By the by, as long as we are talking about such, many years ago (around 1969) I was walking along the beach in the Carolinas (it was summertime so no snow laughing ) and I found a Message In A Bottle. The cork was still tight so it was dry inside, but the note was so faded from sunshine it was not legible, and eventually fell apart.

The bottle is a square green bottle, about a liter, and on one side says "Leeuwarden" and on the opposite side "P. Bokma N.V Distillateurs". It has a little "star" on the bottom. I've always imagined that it was from Holland, but don't really know .... Any info from your side?

Temperatures between 30 and 40C (and a bit over 40 sometimes) every day here.
Not pleasant any more!

Lannis as far as the bottle goes:

J. Bokma is one of the leading genever (gin) distillers in the Netherlands.
Only outdone by Lucas Bols and Sons.
Of course gin is a Dutch invention, copied by the English with varied results.
Leeuwarden is the capital of the province of Friesland, where Ger hails from.

Delft Blue was imitation China. Most 17-th century Delft Blue was produced in China and shipped to here.
Only later, production started in the Netherlands.

I know the green bottles. Bokma is an active distillery which makes jenever or genever (both spellings are correct) - Dutch gin.
Leeuwarden is the capital town of Friesland (my birth province). I went to technical college there (marine engineering).
Jonge (young) jenever has not aged and is clear as water.
Oude (old) genever has aged in barrels and has a bit of a collor.
My uncle in Buffalo (NY) bought it in a local licor store.

The title Friesche Genever on the label distiguishes it from the more well known Schiedam Jenever. Schiedam is a town surrounded by Rotterdam.
Bols, which Whisper mentions, is situated in Amsterdam.

The mention NV on the bottle can mean it's an old bottle. The NV was a Public Limited Liability Company in a form that is not used much, after law changed in the 19-seventies.
NV is since replaced by BV which has a less strict liability obligation. Don't ask details, I'm not a lawyer.
Cheers.

Thats the scary thing about global warming. As the ice melts up north and down south and cools the oceans it supposedly going to shut down that Gulf Stream hence its warming effect. Then we all freeze.... But I guess that will save the Glaciers .....

A white and blue porcelain product was produced in China.
It was imported into the Netherlands.
Later Dutch ceramist started to make a product with the same colors out of clay and Delft Blue Ceramics were born. tired

Hello Kent, when you says: "...I swapped for American measurements..." here in America but not US we measure the things like in most parts of the world. Almost of the American countries do the same.

-Hey Lannis; yes, is like that "Americans" coined that nickname and believe that s the only place in America...

Yes, The Americas stretch from the Arctic to the Antarctic, more or less one continuous land mass..And the various peoples are called Canadians, Mexicans, Argentinians ,etc....But those from the USA are not USians..We are... Americans...
