Speedo Drive Tangs,. Holes and No holes, ?

Just curious if anyone has an idea why some drives have a hole in the drive Tang, and some do not. My experience is the hole just makes it easier for the Tang to break off !!!
Just one of those unanswered questions I seem to find.......

I believe the holes in the drive tangs were put there so that the tangs would break off in case the speedometer drive itself seized thus preventing the rear wheel from locking up. At least that is my guess.

Well,....... That is what they do! There is very little metal between the hole and the gear that's for sure. I wonder if that was done later, or was it dropped later, since some do and some do not.
