Stamping Goldie numbers on B31 cases is a bit naughty. It looks like a nice start to an engine rebuild, though.

As a novice at this, I am curious as to the indicators that you use to tell that the numbers have been altered.
Some of them seem to be miss placed a little, and some seem to be a bit narrower in body. I thought that might just be due to differing amounts of force applied during the stamping process.

????????

Thanks for any tutelage. confused

Well for one, a number that high did not exist. I believe the last number dispatched is recorded as DBD 34 GS 7160.

Someone in the market for a Gold Star should be very worried by this set of cases. It is the best job I've seen to date of forging a new set of numbers. The font he used is all but indistinguishable from the correct GS front, the layout of the letters, numbers, and 'dots' is correct, and the reprofiling and retexturing of the surface under the stamps extends far enough so as not to be obvious except by very close inspection. However, our first clue that something is fishy is the number itself, 8259, which is approximately 1000 higher than that of the last Gold Star made.

There is another set of numbers on the front lug that distinguishes a GS from a B31 (not shown on the eBay listing), but since the forger has the correct stamps those could have been altered as well. However, one set of numbers he didn't alter, that gives the plot away for these cases, is the date '17 7 52' you can see stamped inside the timing cover showing these cases were made four years before the DBD made its debut. With this in mind look at the 2:00 position on the drive side case and you can see where the hole for the oil return line was filled in. Even if this was a Gold Star case that hole disappeared with the 5000-series ZB, and the vestigial boss in the casting at that position was eliminated with the CB.

The listing says "The cases are converted B31 but are indistinguishable" from Gold Star cases. Unfortunately, while that is nearly true for the external appearance of these particular cases, the internals are a different matter. Among other differences, Gold Star cases benefitted from additional strengthening ribs on the inside of the cases that aren't present in non-GS engines.

Of course, anyone who buys the upcoming next edition of 'The Gold Star Buyer's Companion' would have the information and photographs required to identify all of these features for themselves and would save themselves potential heartbreak and thousands of dollars/pounds/euros by not buying a "Gold Star" having forged cases.

For several years Phil Pearson has been converting/modifying higher strength alternator B31 cases with the more substantial drive side web as BSA made to live with the alternator. With Phil's unique dual side by side drive side roller bearing crank, fitted in the modified cases the engine now has 5 main bearings including the alu cam support needle bearing.
This setup has been fitted to many many 604cc big bore stroker engines used by GSrs world wide.
We have this crank setup with OEM bore/stroke in our very fast and high reving Sonic Weld dirt tracker. She enjoys pulling strong at 8k revs. Nice.

Phil will expertly change the engine number to the customers request, that is usually the original engine's OEM number.

It's great that he makes this alternative available. To have the option of buying something that looks like a Gold Star engine but that has better performance is a good thing. However, it's disturbing to read that:

His modified B31 engines would perform identically with their original numbers on them so I can't think of any legitimate reason for remarking them as GS. Blank Gold Star castings were supplied by the factory so that dealers could replace broken Gold Star castings with new Gold Star castings, on which they then stamped the OEM number. However, that definitely is not the same as stamping a non-GS casting with an OEM GS number.

I would have no problem if these B31-based engines were marked, say, 'DBD.PS.xxxx" ('P', for Pearson). However, no matter how much a B31 is modified and its performance improved it didn't leave the factory as a Gold Star so marking it as such can only deceive future buyers into thinking they are buying something that they are not. And, whether they're buying something that performs better than what they thought they were getting is irrelevant, because they thought they were buying an actual Gold Star, not a replica of some kind.

Yes. Just type in http://www.ebay.co.uk/
Your PayPal, and everything else works the same.

I shop Taiwan eBay all the time. Americans are afraid of the 13,000.00 TWD price tags, and won't bid. Right now it's 0.032 cents to a TWD.

Great place to look for Triumph parts... That's where I got my timing gears from... under 40 bucks a set, and in TWD's they were $12,000.00. Scary for Americans.

If you guys all start scoffing up Taiwan Triumph parts... I'll be pissed. I still need a few things. Dibbs on T120 timing gears!

If you look to the left of your original post on this thread you will see links to eBay sites for several countries.

You can also cut and paste. So copy (cut) the eBay item number, go to eBay motors and in the upper right corner you will see search, click on the advanced search and paste the item number in the search box. Auction should pop up.

Yes they do. It's a translated site thru Google.

You can also go direct (which I prefer), and use Google Translate thru your browser.
