Do these work? http://www.eBay.com/itm/5-Sizes-Val...ve-Tool-Fit-Car-Motorcycle-/181668474985 I don't want to bum off my buddy again but the description - fits 16mm to 30mm valve sounds wonky. Perhaps they mean fits 16-30mm valve retainer? or 16-30mm opening in pusher collar. Anybody use these for bsa/triumph? Leon (too cheap to buy a good one and not crafty enough to build one)

This may not be a top of the line valve spring compressor, but it looks perfectly useable for most, if not all britbikes.
I have a cheap valve spring compressor, that looks a bit like this one, and I have never had a valve job that I could not tackle with it.

I have had that same tool for some time, it works great as long as you use a soft hammer to tap the end to unseat the valve collets.
If you do not do that the body will distort but that applies to many valve spring compressors.
To date I have used it on Norton, Triumph (unit/pre unit) Moto Guzzi, Sunbeam and Suzuki heads.

More bikes and projects than you can shake a stick at but they should be done in two shakes of a lamb's tail.

Looks like the one I have is similar but not that exact one.
Still works great and yes the dimensions relate to the retainer fitment.

I like the look of those with the interchangeable ends for them. Mine is all one assembly with no choice but works ok on the Triumphs and Norton. I think it was something over $ 50 when I bought it.....might have been before these started coming from the east..W

I've got that same one Les shows. Works great, wish I'd bought it long ago instead of messing with c clamps, etc. Can't remember who sold it, some sport bike type parts dealer I run across sometimes.

I have been using a large C clamp with a brass bushing with about one third of it cutout that fits on top of the valve spring collet. I use a small screwdriver to wiggle the retainers into place. Not terribly sophisticated but it works and is considerably cheaper than the commercial ones for occasional use.

Bought a VW spring compressor from an chain automotive store 20 yrs ago. Just make new spacers when you have a different bike. Maybe $30

How many have had a C clamp sproing??!!?? laugh
I will confess to one or two.
