Where is the play/ what is moving? Things really should not move once the long spindle draws all the bits together through the centre.

Just a shot in the dark here, I'm not much of a singles fellow, but, are you sure the "play" is NOT in the swing arm???

You haven't said anything about its bearings' condition....

You might want an extra set, or two, of eyes to watch, while you 'make' the play happen...

had a hard think on this problem, the only other part i can change is the drive flange.maybe that will cure it.

How much detail do you need....this is an old photo but the bits are still down in the shop and I'd be happy to snap a pic or two.

[Linked Image]

I think the washer you're asking about is the one in the center at the bottom of the photo.

Need more detail???

Sorry...that first photo was useless blush

Here's the thrust washer....

Number 36 in the parts blow up...

When you're taking the hub apart....that washer stays in there unless you tap it out (gently...PLEASE...it's not tight)...it looks like a flange inside the hub when it's still in there. If you need more detail...I'd be happy to help.

This is what it looks like without the ring. It does look like it is already in place.

Gordo that's a good photo of the stripped down hub :bigt. I was having a time trying to get an angle where you could tell something about it. Heck if you were here in the shop it'd be easy. smile.....but here's what I came up with.

With out the washer

[Linked Image]

All I can think to say about it is...you see those rivet heads?...with the washer out...they are the ONLY thing sticking up...the steps at both outer ends go down.

Here's a shot of the washer going in (sorry for the fuzz...I was in a hurry and losing light)

[Linked Image]

Here's the washer in place....if you ran your finger from the rivet head outward...you would now feel a step up.

[Linked Image]

I tried to get a pic from the other end, looking back at the washer. moving inward....you see the first step.(which goes down as comapired to the rivet head...then the rivet heads and then the washer which now steps up from the surface the rivet heads are on.

[Linked Image]

Okay....it's like trying to describe how to tie your shoe laughing SO MUCH easier if we could just show you. Hope all of this doesn't just confuse you.

Are you 100% sure that it is in the wheel ?
By now there is nothing really left except the swing arm.
It can be very deceiving because you can feel play with the wheel in then take the wheel out and not feel any in the swing arm forgetting that wheel in you have another foot of leverage.

I normally try to verify this by wobbleing the wheel top / bottom and then front / back.
If the front / back feels different ( normally more ) than the top botom then it is the swingarm palying tricks on you.

Or some loose spokes (if there's play in the rim but not in the hub)?

I can accept play over an arc but having play in only one spot seems impossible to me.

Just one spot, left right has to be spokes

Are you sure that this problem is not caused by loose rivets ?
It is not uncommon that the rivets that hold the "crincled" sections to the sleeve come loose, and cause the rear wheel play that you describe.
